I here a noise that is not mormal for my engine. When I shift from drive to neutral, I here a loud "clinck" noise from the gear area. It sounds like something is loose. Is this a maintenance item or am I looking at a big repair?

Usually get the "clunk" going into either gear from neutral. Is the motor running O.K.? It's hard to say exactly what that "clunk" is, unless it's just in your mind, caused by paranoia of motor problems. I've heard all kinds of noises, but wife assures me they're in my head! Is your prop on good and tight? Good Luck!

Motor seems to be running fine. This just started on the way back to the boat ramp and when I was positioning the boat on the trailer this past weekend. I used the word "clink" on purpose. It is not the normal "clunk"sound you hear when going from drive to neutral. I have had the boat for seven years since it was new. Sounds like something is loose and make a metal on metal sound. Definately not in my head.

Maybe remove and check prop, hub, shaft, lower unit oil?....Plenty of lower unit oil?

agree with Robert--could be clutch dog, although in my experience that shows up in reverse shifting.
Be sure you shift firmly; never ease a boat into or out of gear. Some people, in an effort to be gentle with a motor, harm it.

Thanks for your reply. I serviced the lower unit this past weekend. nothing abnormal on the megnetic screw with metal shavings. I listened to the noise closer after I serviced the lower unit and determined that it seem to be coming from the upper part of the motor like where the drive shaft would go into the engine. Is there anything in that area that is common going bad? The noise is to the point that I'm affraid something is about to break.
