I have a 98 merc 150 carb saltwater. The problem is after initial startup at idle it will stall. This only happens at low or idle speeds. At speed it runs fine. After stalling to get it started you have to prime it with the key switch. Help!!

Re: low speed stalling

If the problem exsisted before the carb cleaning I would think it was low fuel pressure-- bad ck vavles in the pump, a vacume leak in the line or fitting, a anti syphon valve in the tank sticking all of this can be cked. by simple having someone keep the pressure up by pumping the bulb. If that don't help you have a lean idle mix--- low float levels, top gasket on the carb leaking, wrong idle mixture or even a crankcase leak, bad lower main seal? I doubt the last two but it is a slight possiblity

Re: low speed stalling

I had an idle problem and started checking for loose fuel connections like Laddies mentioned.
In doing so, I found 12 broken or missing tie-wraps that decay or break over time.

Well worth the 10-minute exercise.
