Need help! Just started up my 1999 40 hp Mercury Tracker on my pontoon. The "low oil" alarm is constantly sounding. The reservoir is full. The engine seems to be getting oil by the looks of the exhaust. It did smoke a lot more than usual when it first started up, but looked normal after a minute or two. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Low Oil Alarm!

Most likely the magnet, in the oil tank, has come off the float. This is a common problem on the Mercs. The magnet, while attached to the float, goes over a sensor when the oil gets low. You can either disconnect the blue wires from the bottom of the tank and keep the tank full of oil, or replace the tank or repair the float. The latter is not too easy to do.<br />As far as smoking alot at start up, you might have a faulty check valve in the fuel system. The easiest way to check this is to let the motor sit for a few days without starting. Then disconnect the fuel line, remove the fuel connector and then pump some fuel into a glass container. There should be no oil in the fuel sample. If there is than you have a faulty check valve.
