Yesterday while fishing my 9 year old daughter got snagged on something. I was fishing out of the back of the boat so I started reeling my line in. Even though the drag was slipping it was tight enough she was having trouble holding the rod. I reached over to loosen the drag and she thought I was grabbing the rod. She let go and I watched my favorite Browning spinning rod headed for the bottom. I quickly reeled my line I and fired up the motor to turn around. There was a strong wi d blowing us down river and we were moving pretty fast. My first mistake was not looking for a reference point as soon as the rod went over. We circled around and starting dragging bottom to try to snag it. A friend of mine in another boat came over to lend a hand and managed to snag it. He was about 75 feet upriver from where we estimated it went over. I was glad to have it back just so my daughter wouldn't feel bad about losing daddy's fishing pole.

Show her how to hit the release button until Dad can help her.

And hit the waypoint asap! Glad it worked out and I know how good that feels! I thought I'd lost a brand new rod/reel a couple months back but it turned out that when I hauled up the down rigger, the release held and I was able to retrieve it.

Re: Lost rod

when I was a kid, my dad tied a 20' piece of kite string to a cleat and my rod handle until I was 10 if we were on the boat
I do the same for my son

Don't buy any lottery tickets in the near future. You've already used up a lot of good luck. Glad your day had the happy ending.

Re: Lost rod

I never fish without lanyards on any of my rods, even the cheap ones. On many rods (most, actually) for lake fishing you can take a small drill bit and gently drill at the end of the handle at an angle. Then through this hole I feed a large car key ring and that secures the rod to the boat via paracord.

The lanyard can be a bit annoying at times, and it certainly won't help if jaws comes knocking but it has saved me many poles in my lifetime. You would be surprised how bummed you get even when you loose that junk rod from your collection you swear you hate.

Re: Lost rod

A few weeks ago we were on the sandbar playing and i noticed the boat moved and it turned out our anchor came untied. While we were only in about 3 ft of water i couldn't find it, i looked for about 15 mins and then we took off, well me being me i wasn't done trying to find it so we went back and after 30 minutes of searching the bottom i found it. There were plenty of boats watching me laughing that id nvr get it and when i did i got a nice ovation lol. Funny thing is that the next week out i found a brand new coffee can someone turned into an anchor now i call that luck!
