Loran C ?????????

Well the kids are old enough to fish, bills are gettin paid so I've pulled my 20' Mako out of storage. When I was fishing my Lowrance fishfinder/Loran C was top of the line. I paid big bucks for this set up. I'm planning on buying a hand held GPS. What I want to know is are the Loran towers and system still operating. You see my plotter/fishfinder is really handy.

Yea, Loran is still working fine, and not planned to go away for a few more years anyway.<br /><br />I'm doing like most other guys I know, I'm going to use the Loran until it dies, and then get a nice GPS plotter setup.<br /><br />I also use a Garmin plotting handheld, with the Bluechart maps, and it is REALLY nice.

i dont think so--I hope it isn't gonna go out. My family has been shrimpin along the gulf coast here for 20 years. There database of hook/hangs/wreckages on the bottom of the sea is all TD1/TD2/Loran C. <br /><br />It wasn't until around around 1996 that the whole shrimping industry starting buy GPS equipment. Before it was just used to communicate with the coasty on our wher abouts. The reason why they started to buy gps gadgets was because of the new computer plotting software that came out and just made plotting and everything ...so ez. Now all the boats have a computer running windows as the OS and the plotting/charting software. And of course they still have all the years of hooks/hangs/wreckages and favorites spots on loran C.<br /><br />hope this helps

Hey Lets, <br />My dad shrimped the Corpus Christi area for years so I spent lots of time on the water down there. I have the same book Hangs and Snags of the Texas Coast or something like that. Really handy for off shore fishing Im trying to remember if it only gives TDs or if it gives Lat/Lon also. Guess Ill have to dig it out.

Last I heard LORAN was extended to 2005.

Yea, I'm riding by all of my favorite spots with my LORAN this year, and then saving them to a hand help GPSMAP 75 (that has the bluecharts in it). <br /><br />Then, I'm saving them to my PC, so that when my Loran dies, I'm ready for GPS.<br /><br />If the prices keep dropping, I'll buy a big screen boat unit. But if they don't, I'm plenty happy with the hand held mapping GPS.
