Has anyone used any of these top-water lures? He has like 5 main ones, a frog, a craw fish, one called the wide glide, whopper plopper. I've seen them for sale on eBay. They're a little more pricey than most lures... And I'm curious if anyone has used them and what success they've had.

thanks

Re: Larry Dahlberg top-water lures

I have the diver frog, I have had some success with Largemouth bass with it, but it still doesn't beat a pig and a jig for where I fish. What I do like about it over the pig/jig combo is the ability to put it into just about any structure, lilly pads, weeds, over the top of a log bed, it doesn't get snagged.

Part of why I prefer a pig/jig combo is that I'm just used to it, I have worked with the frog only a couple seasons and I go to it when I'm not getting the bites I normally get on my old reliable, so I am already starting off on a slow spot when I reach for it. It did give me a 6 1/2 Largemouth last summer, so it does work and it would probably work better for me if I tried it more often. :)

Where do you fish fellow Minnesotan?

Mille Lacs always scares me just a bit, it is so big and round and seems like there is no escape of wind starts to roll in...but I don't know first hand, never fished it. We have a place up on Leech, but while it is big, it has a ton of bays and inlets so I don't feel so overwhelemed unless I get out in the big lake, I only go there if weather is really nice and I'm just crossing to get to another bay

Going to try opener on Leech this year, hope ice out has happened by then! Our lakes down here (I'm in Owatonna/Faribault/Northfield area due south of you) iced out just last week.

Leech average ice out is April 27rd with the latest being May 23rd  But Mille Lac's latest ice out was May 7th, so you should be good to go regardles on opener. Going to try a frog?

Any lakes good down there in faribault? Well Owatonna Cabella's, I'll be heading there soon ! I'm in the same boat though on mille lacs. I've never fished it and I'm more of a bass, northern fisherman... so I like the bays and more shallow less choppy areas. I'm jealous of your place on Leach, another lake I haven't really been to, but would like to !! This will be my 2nd year with my "new to me" 1982 starcraft. I'm 26, bought my 1st boat when I was 15.. So I need to find some different lakes to take it on this year!

Well I'm about 5 minutes from Cabelas, so it can be a little hard on my wallet living so close, lol. :D :D

You are the same age as our oldest son, but he isn't a boater or fisherman (I'm pretty sure he is ours ;) ).

Lakes down here, Sakatah in Faribaul has coughed up some Northerns for us in the 18-29 inch range, bass and crappies but I haven't been on it in a couple years. Clear Lake in Waseca has some trophy sized Bass, they use the lake as a nursery to stock other lakes at tournament time. French lake is just too green and has too many shallow spots in it (had a friend wreck the hull of a boat on one) but it gave a freind of ours a 50inch Musky.
Cedar Lake in Faribault has Northern and Bass as well. Mazaska in Faribault prodcued some walleye and bass for us a couple years ago.

We have been doing most of our fishing on Leech these days, but sometimes hit our local lakes.

LOL, yes indeed, the Green Ghetto is alive and well at our house. We have decided to keep the ugly thing AND get a second boat for fishing and keeping up North...you know, why have one boat when we can have two at twice the repair costs!!

So now I have one boat named

"Green Ghetto"
and my newest addition is

"Forester Gump" (its a 1992 Forester fiberglass job, runs very nice though and is in great shape) :D :D

We are taking your signature very seriously in our house :D

Green Ghetto is for fishing locally, so my husband can take it out whenever, and since I am the one who stays up North the most, the new spiffy red job is mine!!!! ;)
