largest outboard for my 1994 Maxum 1700xr?

I have a force 120hp on my 17 foot maxum. The engine currently has low compression in one of the cylinders so i'm trying to figure out what i should do to get it running this summer. I"m not sure whether or not i should put a whole new outboard on the boat such as a used mercury or just have the force rebuilt. I'm trying to keep it under 2 grand. What is the largest outboard i can put on this boat? The sticker has been removed so i can't look on the boat. I've seen 17 footers with outboards up to 150hp so i was hoping atleast a 130. Thanks

NADA price guide says 120 hp. for a 94 1700XR.

The length of the boat is only a part of the equation to determine its max HP rating. There should be a tag on the boat saying what its rated for.

The tag had been removed when i bought the boat. I understand that it's about thrust and the transom along with weight and length. That is why i am asking. Anyone know for sure? Thank you

Nada Price guide is pretty accurate. The older 1700XR is rated at 85 hp.
