Hi,

We are new boaters (Monterey 190LS Montura) and would like some suggestions on tent camping areas on Lake Winnipesaukee that you can actually camp on the lake so you don't have to pull your boat out every day. Or if there is another lake you know of in the Northeast that you can camp on the lake, let us know.

Thanks in advance
Denise

Hi Denise,
I don't think you will find many, if any, places like that on Winni. The best spot on a semi big lake to do what you want to do in NH would be Lake Umbagog in Errol. If you want to do a little more travelling, Lake Champlain is right up your alley as far as camping and boating goes.

Thanks Guageguy,

We will investigate both the lakes you mention. There are a lot of places to boat around here, but not many big enough to camp on.

Denise, I know of 2 places and they are in Maine.
I have never been there but plan on going this summer to South Arm Campground in Andover Me.It is on upper and lower Richardson Lakes, not too far from Sunday River Ski Area. They have a web site www.southarm.com They have a regular campground and also 38 remote sites only accessible by boat. It sounds really nice.
The other is Moosehead Lake, there are a lot of campgrounds around the lake which you can look up on line. I dont know of any by name other than Lilly Bay State Park, Nice campground, boatramp and dock. However, we could not get a site on the water so we went on an adventure. Loaded every thing in the boat and map in hand went out on to the lake to find remote sites, there are many of them, first come first serve. They are very remote and primitive, Tent spot, picnic table, fire grill and an outhouse. Not for everybody. We went just BEFORE July 4th and had the place to ourself. There is a great Map Book called the Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, it is by DeLome Co and has a lot of camping info.

Denise
Try the Long Island Bridge Campground in MoultonBorough. I have tented there many times. They have a dock and mooring bouys, and there is a section of the campground that isright on the water. The owners are real nice folks too.
bill

Try the NH Parks and recreation. Used to live in Nashua, there are plenty.

Try *any* other lake. My lasting image of that place is a couple of boats going way too fast near shore with a barrage of empty beer cans being thrown off as they were consumed.

I wouldn't get a night's sleep camping on the lake. Your mileage may vary.

goat...I'm not as familiar with Winni, but that lake and others in the NH Lakes region should accomodate what you're looking for. I'm on Newfound (20 miles west) and there are a lot of camp grounds on the lake for tenting, cabins, etc. along with great (free) water access 24 hours a day at Wellington State park. I use my waterfront too much to rent and few around me do either, but...do a search on Newfound Lake, or look on the NH State recreation web sites. There's lots of what you're looking for...

Sebago can be very very crowded on a weekend.... I live 10 minutes from the launch and pretty much avoid it due to (sorry) many out of staters rude attitudes.

-John

You need to go to Winnipesaukee in NH, to understand crowded.

There are many lakes in the Adirodacks that will fit your needs. The Raquette River canoe system runs through Raquette Lake as well as several others. There are lean to shelters provided at many places along the shore. Some are a little dicey to get in to with rocks but with the amount of places and the few people it is worth it. Also believe it or not it is free! Long Lake is part of the same system and never really crowded. Don't go between Memorial Day and Fathers Day because of the black flies.

I have this theory that you should avoid lakes in the vicinity of the ocean, particularly cold-water ocean. There are a lot of people that don't want to deal with the skills necessary to boat on the ocean. Wanting to goof off on a calm lake is certainly as legitimate a reason for boating as any other - we are all different - BUT on such lakes, I think you get a disproportionate share of yahoos who know nothing about rules of the road, have no regard for others, and are usually drunk on top of it all. All they know is it's easier than the salt.

Re: Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire Camping

I TOTALLY agree with you swist, I have a homemade boat with a ton of oak on it, looks sharp, not a single person at the ramp has ever said a word to me about it on a freshwater lake, I goto a salt water ramp and I get at least 2 guys comming up to ask me all the details.

Ocean brings the people who live to boat and generally know 110% what they are doing, the lake gets a lot of people who dont have a clue and they only venture out a couple times a year, to goof off and cause a ruckus. I am not saying that the freshwater guys know any less, but as its been said fresh is a lot easier to goof off on then the salt.

I didn't realize that lake boaters were on a lower level than salt water boaters."Yahoos" and causing a "ruckus".I've been on the ocean and lakes and have seen poor examples of intelligent operation on both.I don't think it's a fair comparison.John I will have to disagree with you about Sebago,I've been on that lake for years and I never seen that lake crowded. The locks, the songo river, possibly, but it's so large there is always plenty of room.

I didnt realize that either, is that what your saying?

I live within 5 minutes of the lake, you live 2+ hours, I will stick with my statements.
