The ice cracked open on one of my favorite lakes that holds nice lakers. It would be my first time going in my boat for them and would greatly appreciate any information or techniques on how to catch these lunkers. Thanks :D

Re: Lake Trout Techniques

I think the same technique works there as here. At ice out depending if there is a hatch of insects. If so try a fly rod with qiuck sinking leader an an indicator set at about 7 feet. You can also try any varity of spoon or spinner and all will work. If all else fails a worm or shiner on a float at about 7 feet and sit it out

Re: Lake Trout Techniques

mountainboy- What lakes are you fishing for Lakers on? I have an old school friend in Albuquerque that I talk with often who guides. If I know where to ask about I could pick his brain for ya.

I myself don't target lakers (Lake Michigan) but have caught them using general trolling techniques while out for Bows and Kings. The charter boys here drop to the bottom and run J-Plugs(or similar), dodger/fly combos and trolling spoons between 1.8 and 2.2 mph on the gps. But I suppose time and temp will effect this.

The last time I was in N.M. I fly fished in the Santa Fe area and up around Toas. Beautiful country!

Lake trout a.k.a, grey trout, greatlakes char,
great grey trout,laker,mackinaw trout,masamacush,
mountain trout,namaycush,salmon trout,togue,taque,
Salvelinus Namaycush.

Ice out is the very best time to catch big Lake
trout. This is the time to catch them shallow and
on the surface. As surface water temperature
rises these fish move to deeper colder hangouts.
Look for them off points and underwater reefs,
and river and stream mouths were the incoming
water brings insects and other foods.Try
trolling flatfish like t-60 and k-6 for the
very big lunkers. Ive caught a 38lb monster on
the surface with a silver t-60 flatfish and a 28lb
on a small 3/4 oz kamlooper spoon on the bottom
in 150 ft as summer and warm weather progresses
How deep is the water where you will be fishing?

NOSLEEP is rite-on :) Ice out they are on the surface. Same thing for land locked salmon. We fly fish for them early season using streamers just below the surface with sinking lines while trolling. The streamers should be sparsely dressed. A heavy bodied fly doesn't work as good.

The Unorthodox Flyfisher ;)

Re: Lake Trout Techniques

Hey--Thanks alot everyone for the great information. Heron Lake(near Chama, NM) is the lake that holds nice Lake Trout and is 150-200 feet deep or more in some areas. I talked to some local anglers and they also recommended jigging with cut bait--first spot them on the fish finder, find the depth and jig on the bottom.
Barlow--I live in Albuquerque. Santa Fe and Taos are beautiful country. Very nice backpacking to nice high alpine lakes that hold cutthroat, brown and rainbow trout. I'm going out tomorrow (Thursday) for a couple days and will let you guys know how I did. Thanks again :D

Flyrod, the San Juan River is a great place to fish. Usually, I fish the "bait" section and use night crawlers, roe, spinners and other things. The Quality Water section is usually a lot busier than the part I like. Navajo Lake is right above the San Juan and is a great place to fish for browns, rainbows, bass, kokanee and a few other species. Good to hear that you have been in my part of the country. :D

Hello Nosleep :) Are you from the east or western Canada??? I've fished the Miramichi back in 1990 in a town called Doaktown, just down the street from Ted Williams. Ithink at the time that you could keep 6-7 grilles and it took me a week to catch my limit.Fish were jumping all around. I've also fished in Quebec. Fished the Grand Cascapedia; Little Cascapedia and the Bonaventure River and we stayed in a town called New Richmond.

Re: Lake Trout Techniques

mountainboy- isn't Heron a no wake lake? or am I thinking of some parallel universe? It seems I've heard about it at some point...I'll give my friend a jingle and see if he knows anything.

Good ol' Northern New Mexico snow storm came in and I had to postpone my trip :( The weather looks promising for next weekend. Yes Barlow, Heron is a no wake lake. Perfect for serious anglers and sail boaters/windsurfers. :D

Thanks Barlow, I am planning on heading up to Heron this coming weekend. The fishing report said that lakers were hitting flatfish trolling and jigs. Congrats on the puppies! :D

Re: Lake Trout Techniques

hey no sleep I live about 3 minutes from the credit river and when those big kings are running there isnt much like it. I use a 8/9 weight with #18 hook and have a ball all day with them. In fact its not uncommon to have a day with over 40 salmon on the line. You might lad a dozen if lucky but I tell you the back sure is sore by the end of the day

Re: Lake Trout Techniques

ernest depends where your house backs on tho the credit. If its before August 15 take a walk down the river past dundas you'll get to a bend about 1/2 mile down long real big hole stacked with fish and no one to fish them. Dont cross undas after the 15th as at that thime its a sanctuary BEST SPOT ice breakers, falling rocks, pool above burnhamthorpe and a few pools before the 403 hope it helps
