Even as this boating season ends I'm looking forward to the next one! We went to Norris and Dale Hollow last year and had a blast. I'd like to try a new lake for the heck of it. Our group is always 10+ 20somethings who like to tube, wakeboard, drink beer, and tie up and party with new folks. We rent a big cabin/house and go down for 4-5 days.

I was thinking about Cumberland, but I'm not sure about it since I've heard the water is still down. What other lakes in the TN/KY/Midwest area are there to check out?

It has been years, but I always loved Cherokee Lake. I'm not sure what kind of party scene you'll find, but there's plenty of lake to play on.

There is Herrington, Laurel and Cave Run for your consideration. I am pretty sure they all allow your choices in at least parts of the lake.

Nolin is a smaller lake (inbetween 5k to 3k acres), but beautiful. Wake boarding contest and bands on the water on the last trip there.

Cumberland is very wide, plenty of room for what ever. I think its impossible for that lake to get crowded. They have very nice house boats for rent and cabins with a boat dock around the Cumberland falls area.

Kentucky Lake has lots of boating space. Rent a cabin or two at Moors Resort (moorsresort.com). It's across the lake from the "party cove" at the rock quarry at the mouth of Pisgah Bay.

I grew up on Nolin lake. Beautiful country around there and should be tons of cabins for rent. Also, you're in the middle of "Cave Country" and can hit up some of the big ones while you're there.

It's a small lake, but it's river fed so it winds a lot and has plenty of tie-up spots. The biggest drawback, outside of it's size, is "things around it". Not a lot of options on restaurants, etc.

Lake Cumberland is a beautiful area and the lake is much wider/longer. Being in the Central to Eastern part of the state it brushes up near the foot of the Appalachia's. Might want to consider the Houseboat option on this lake. Summerset is a nice sized small town to visit for supplies, if you're in that area. Also, if you stay on the Eastern side, you're not far from Daniel Boone State Park. It's worth the drive over to go check out.

If you're coming from the Cincinnati area, Lake Cumberland would be handy. Take a weekend trip down there to scout out the area. When running alongside the lake from the Bowling Green end to Somerset, it seems like it's 100 miles long. (It's not.)

With all the houseboat manufacturers in the area, see if you can rent a couple of barge style houseboats. You can probably check the water levels on the Corp of Engineers' website.

Kentucky Lake would be another good one, but it's the longest lake in the region. The TVA Land Between the Lakes is between KY Lake and Lake Barkley on the Cumberland River. Check out the fabulous facilities on the KY end of those lakes. Kentucky and Tennessee have absolutely fabulous state parks, some with cabins, etc.

Lake Cumberland and Kentucky Lake are both supposed to be phenomenal. I haven't been out on them personally, but they both have the reputation similar to Dale Hollow.

Re: KY/TN Lakes to Visit in Summer 2013

It's been a while since I boated in KY, but Lake Cumberland has more pairs of my sunglasses then I can remember

It's immense size is really handy, when it's busy you can usually find somewhere to tie up in a cove & have it pretty much to yourself as a homebase. And tube & etc in & out of the cove & part of the main lake. But even when the lake is low, you need to watch your location, particularly near dark. Heard many 'lost in the fog' & 'couldn't find which channel' to follow, so keep track of where you are & where you're headed.....

BUT: it's primarily in a dry county, and I've seen loads of people arrested & taken into custody for reckless driving, drinking, possession of alcohol and seen lots of tickets & summons issued for lack of correct safety gear & lack of PFD's. Local, state & F&W cops all work together, watch from the woods overlooking a ramp/marina and from a state park's waterfall picnic area, scanning for alcohol to be loaded onto a boat then track down the boat on the water. Not just on holidays or weekends. Only once was it remotely crazy like Lake Havasu is portrayed, but we often called it The Havasu of the East:redface: Getting locked up on Sat of a holiday weekend & having the cops tell your buddies to pick you up after you see the judge on Tues:eek: sucks.

Fortunately, I never got to see the inside of the F&W boat, nor did any of my buddies.:) But yep seen them drag a guy off his inner tube float & out of the water into cuffs....

It's been a long while, but I doubt much of that ^^ has changed much.

Boating in KY, miss it regularly!!!!!!!! Tennessee has some great possibilities too....

Try Laurel River Lake and catch yourself some fish plus you have many places to set up a family camp.

Why hasn't anybody told you aboat Norris Lake !!! Nortris is a great lake , huge 880 miles of shore line. You can always find a place to call your own for the day , 22 marina's and lots of scenery. I happen to own a 1100 sguare ft floating house at Whitman Hollow would be glad to help get you hooked on a great lake experience .

I too am from Cincinnati. I have always been partial to Cave Run Lake. It's not as big as others mentioned but very nice. Very nice state camp ground (deer come up very close). And, it's only 140 miles away.

Re: KY/TN Lakes to Visit in Summer 2013

I have taken my boat down from Cincinnati the last 2 years to Cumberland and will make a few trips this year. If we have 6 or so we rent a cabin, if it is just my wife and I we do a hotel. Some of the cabin rentals near Somerset have their own private ramp back on the river which is nice. Though if you are going to the "Party Cove" from there it can take me almost 45 minutes trimmed out.

Thinking of going to Norris this year at least once, I think it is only a few more minutes down 75.
