lately people have been walking in front of the house and seen one person walk up the driveway and look into the boat. Might be innocent but ya never know. Maybe I'm paranoid.

So every thing now gets taken out of the boat.

Went fishing last weekend with the boys. Launched, son is holding the boat and I park the truck. Get in the boat... No keys...... ugh. Can you believe that... I forgot them.. Even had a mental picture of exactly where they are...

At least the dock is slow and I have a long bow line. We were able to push the boat out of the launch and put it in the other dock area. 30 minutes later I came back with the keys....

I always kept a spare set of boat keys in the trucks glovebox and a spare set of truck keys in the boat's tackle box. You just never know...

I keep a spare set of both boat and SUV keys in the bilge area where I also keep a few spare plugs. I'm that guy... I also keep a spare serpentine belt, prop, tools, etc.

I picked up one of those small waterproof, keychain type cases at a local marina and keep it in the boat glovebox. There is a spare truck, boat, coupler padlock, and house key in there for "just in case". I was imagining how the rest of the day would go it someone tossed the keychain to someone and it sank to the bottom!

I keep a set hidden on the boat that'd need to be cut loose to use.

I started that way, too. A set of boat keys under the center console, wire tied to the steering cable. One thing I always hated was getting to the dock and remembering the keys on the kitchen counter. I started prepping the boat the night before, running the engine, charging the battery, and leaving the keys in the boat ignition, and putting in the drain plug. It became a checklist of sorts.

Re: Keys....

I guess I'm the paranoid one then, I have four sets of spare keys, One on the boat, one on the truck, one for the wife and one for me, each key set has a boat key, truck key, hitch key, trailer lock keys(2), camper key and a floaty thingy. I also have one truck key with a floaty thingy on it for the return trip after parking the truck and trailer. The one key I don't have is for my Wifes Jeep so since this troubling situation has presented itself Company Policy has changed somewhat, now all key sets are distributed at the ramp as part of launch protocol, and returned as part of retrieve protocol, when the wife decides its ok for me to have a key for her Jeep Grand Cherokee that I bought her she can have a set of keys to my toys.......its been 2 years, I don't think shes worried

Heh, did some dash work once, wanted to take the boat out before I finished rewiring the key. Pretty easy to hotwire, and easy to get to. Keys? Who needs em?!

Re: Keys....

I never take the keys out unless I'm leaving the boat at the dock while I go get the truck. I do flip the battery switch to off just so no one starts the motor. I keep an extra set in the glove box of the truck. I face the trailer hitch in and lock it when I park the boat in the driveway and I never leave anything of value in the boat. I suppose I could also pull the pin on the break-away tounge to ensure nobody can tow it.

At the lake, I throw my full truck key ring under the mat and take the spare ignition key and remote with me. If I loose the truck key I can always break a window and get home and I don't loose all my work and house keys.

This is the reason I keep thinking I want to make a switch for off-run and have a push button for the starter and not even mess with keys...Keys are a false sense of security with boats imho...

Exactly what I have been contemplating lately. I have never removed my keys, and I keep a spare set onboard. I thought about doing the on/off and push button thing, maybe hiding one of them?

Always carry an extra key for my truck in my pants pocket. If you have electric door locks and dogs sooner or later you are going to need it.

Re: Keys....

only time i pull the keys is when i leave it at a dock overnight i take em out and stash them out of sight. same thing with the fish finder and gps and anything that is worth x- ammount of dallors. as for the truck keys 10 feet from the dock there in my pants pocket once in the boat they go in the cup holder. half the time i forget them in the igntion of the truck. i now put a wire coat hanger in my tool box incase i lock my self out. getting pretty good at jimming my truck door now.

Re: Keys....

This is an alternative to those with chips on their keys where it cost you $60+ to make a key.... If you go to a real key/locksmith store they will make you a key of your car wihtout the chip on it for about 2 dollars just so you can get in the vehicle. Dont try to start your car with a key without the chip, in some vehicles it can lock the car computer and will cause you a trip to the dealer$.

Yup.... hardworker. I agree. A key is not going to keep anybody from violating my boat....but my company and friends will.
