Kayak fishing...sit in, or sit on?

I am still Kayak hunting. I see cheap sit in kayaks all of the time, but am always worried about the kayak flipping or rolling over. For anyone who's kayak fished, what is better? on top or in?

I think I'd rather have a canoe instead of a yak. There's more room to put stff in it, and you could take a friend along if you wanted.

What's the price difference between a used yak and a used canoe?

If going with a Kayak, the Sit On Top is better. If you primarily fish colder, fast water, maybe a sit in. Even with a raised home built seat, my back will start to bother me after a few hours. Only use mine where we can't get another boat in. Even my son prefers not to use kayaks, if we don't have to. Some of the new smallish canoes look like a much more comfortable solution. Hold more gear, too.

Very nice John. I assume that's your yak?

ngt,

I am sure that kayak fishing is popular up there, but it is crazy popular in San Diego. Go join www.sdfish.com and www.plasticnavy.com and you can find out what you need to know.

I have a Hobie Mirage Outback and love it. I'm pretty good sized at 250lbs and have never had a problem with tipping over. I've even taken my boys on it with me when they were young; one fore & one aft. I've fished from it, packed it picnic stuff & toys for the day, and even towed another kayak with it. If I were to do things over again I'd buy this one again.

So...I like the idea of a sit on top. If you're fishing or anything like that, you want something that's going to drain well. Of course you'll get a little wet with a sit on top, but there's a lot of storage. If you have a sit inside, you'll need a spray skirt and you'll have to learn how to perform an Eskimo roll in case you turn over in the water.

thanks for all of the input and links/groups info! "Stable" is the most important to me and although I'm 6'2", I'd rather not have something too long. I was looking at a cobra fish n' dive because of the weight cap. for a BIG buddy I have taking it out, but with money getting super tight, it's kind of going to be a cheapo sit in or cheapo sit on for the time being. Something between 200-300 off craigslist with a seat and paddle sounds about right. This is also coming from someone who has never sat on a Kayak in his life. But, this summer it was my mission to grab one and hit some lakes. I've seen people troll the rivers around here with kayaks, but I'd be worried about actually catching a huge striper and having it just pull the kayak over or something. That or the wind picking up when I'm far from the dock. thanks again for the advice! Hopefully someday I can get a couple of really nice ones. "Native Propel" or something, lol...but at about $2400 each, I doubt it.

By the way...the Hobie is almost "hands free!" There is a pedal drive system so you can make yourself go forward without using a paddle. I've actually trolled with my kayak...pole in my hands and pumping away with my legs. This is great since it frees your hands to use for something else.

that's why I dream of the native watercraft propel one. You can go forwards and backwards for fishing coves with the wind at your back. So much money though :(
