Can an old Simpson 280 series meter be used to test Johnson power pack? It has a positive and negative DC setting and a range of 500v but I am not sure if this is a DVA meter. thx in advance

google DVA designs ... a few diodes and condensers will allow you to convert the AC to DC for reading with your vom

Pretty much the same as a KS meter has used by Telco's years ago :) noticethe x1 ohms scale.... great for testing points on magnetos
mine uses a 30 battery $$$$ if you can find them.... is just wired in 3 x 9v batteries inside (lots of room) and it seems to work perfectly :)

No, it can not be used as a DVA.
The update rate of the units isn't fast enough to catch the voltage peaks your looking for.

Need to build a DVA adapter from above instructions.

Basically you test parts that supply input to the CDI / switch box.----And easy to test coils.----Make for a simple decision on when switchbox / powerpack is good or not.

your meter is probably 50 years and will work perfectly reading the AC converted into to DC by the "DVA" adapter which is only a simple rectifier with the condenser that allows the peaks of the sine waves to be accumulated and will give you what you want to know. DC wise.

use the DC 500 V scale

lots of articles on the web
