I am looking at a Johnson 75HP Stinger, 1977. It has two sets of controls and two props. I have been told it ran good last year, but after storage it now has spark to only one cylinder??? Compression is from top to bottom 115 115 120? He said that it probably needs a power pack valued at $150.00. I am not an expert and need some help? I have talked this price from $600.00 to $380.00....thoughts?

Thanks,
Dave

Sorry the boat is a 15' Trihull fiberglass Galaxy (rated for up to 70HP), but if the motor is good deal I will buy it regardless of the boat I use it on.

Should be well worth the $380. Heck the controls and lower unit are probably worth that. Make sure you post your problem in the J/E forum before throwing a power pack at it. I'm no expert but I've read that a lot of times the pack is replaced when it's actually a much simpler, cheaper issue.

I'd grab it at less than $400, especially if the compression is good and even. As noted, it's well worth that in parts. Packs can be had for less than $150, too, if you shop around a bit.

heck i'll buy it...but be carfefull i think you might have an over power issue and if it a fiberglass transom that is older i would be carefull with the stress on the transom.

Good buy for the price. Worse case scenario, and if all else fails part it out. Get your money back.

Sounds like an excellent buy. That vintage was a VERY good, simple and reliable motor. With a good decarb, you may see those compression #'s go up a bit. New we would see 140psi out of those.
Crack the lower unit drain plug to check for water. I wouldn't sweat the 5HP difference, it's basically the same block that started as a 55HP.

+1 as EZMOBEE said. Post over at J/E forum to diagnose the spark issue.

I think this guy probably got his answer in the past two years.
