Start at 1-1/2 turns out from lightly bottomed position. Then adjust for best idle with slow speed screw. Adjust high speed screw while at WOT under load for best performance. :)

Fabulous, thanks! What a great resource this is! O.K., how about this - one of my Javelins keeps jumping out of forward gear while under way (esp. at low speed) even with the control cable disconnected, and I can't find adjustment info in the shop manual I have.

Does it clunk when it jumps out of gear? If so, time for a new clutch dog.

Hard to say if it clunks because of the clutch dog or just because it jumps and gives quite a bounce, but lets assume the worst, a 'new' clutch dog sounds like a parts motor item rather than 'new old stock'?

Remove the 1x3 inch plate of side of the motor leg, the shift linkage is behind it. the bolts in the coupler, MUST go thru the indentations in the shift rods upper and lower, it is usually the lower bolt that is removed when doing a water pump. if they are not thru the indentations, the shift rod is the wrong length, and will not shift all the way into forward. if this is not the problem, 99% clutch dog and forward gear. lots of $$$$.

My '61 Lark III 40 hp did the same thing. Parts alone were quoted at over $600!

So I found a parts motor with bad compression for $100. Made the swap with the help of a guy that knew what he was doing (found him thru Craigslist). Bingo, back in bisiness with plenty of other parts for future use.

Re: Johnson Javelin 1957 35hp carb adjustments

Thanks, I double checked that and tinkered a bit, managed to fix it with a few small adjustments. Now, a few small parts I need to find sources for: packing for the hi and low speed needles on the carb, are these available or does one need to make his own these days? And the fat o-rings from the female (tank line) end of the twin-hose gas line connector. I have noticed them starting to leak and the o-rings today are too small in cross-section, the ones that came out of the connector are quite fat. Cheers!
