Is there an Alpha one gen one gimbal bearing replacement guide?

My 1990 alpha one gen one is getting quite loud, especially when I'm turning the boat. I had a qualified technician tell me that the gimbal bearing is failing, and he wants over $500 to fix it. Since I just put a new disc brake upgrade kit on my trailer, I think I can handle replacing the gimbal bearing.

Is there a good thread here on iboats that has pictures and illustrations on how to replace the gimbal bearing and the bellows?

How do I select the right transom seal kit for my drive from the parts store here on iboats?

What is the special tool I need to remove the gimbal ring? I'd like to build my own slide hammer bearing puller. Are there any other specialty tools I'll need?

$500 sounds like overkill for just a bearing.are you sure thats what it was for and not the complete job of boots and shift cable?
pullers and installers can be made, or borrowed from rental places.you would want to download the manual #6 for your drive .

Just remove the drive and pull the bearing out... No need to remove anything else. Have a search, Don posted up a great picture of a slide hammer and 3 jaw puller that works a treat with gimbal bearings.... All you need as far as gasket is the bell housing gasket set... Available from your local friendly Merc dealer. And whoever told you it was the gimbal bearing could easily be wrong. It could be the unis....

I think I'm going to do just that. Pull the bearing, replace it, and leave the boots and everything else alone for now. I don't think my universal joints are bad because it's a brand new drive that I just put in last fall.

I just need to know what gimbal bearing part # I need....
