I have a 1970 Evinrude which will not go in gear. I have power to the solenoids and a full gearcase of oil. I pulled the gearcase off the bottom of the motor and noticed that the driveshaft has no gear at the top. I hope I am wrong about this, but shouldn't the top end of the driveshaft have teeth?? ?

Thanks, david

Dave if the splines are gone on the shaft, they are probably gone on the crank shaft also. tilt the engine as high as you can and take a power flashlight, and look in thru the Bottom. it's possible you had a short in the lower unit that activated things wrong, and locked up the lower. and stripped the splines. or you broke the drive shaft.

Dave, are you saying there is nothing at the top of the shaft, not even stripped splines? If so, yep, it probably is broken off. A bent lower unit or exhaust housing will cause that. Yeah, I was sceptical too, wondering how in blazes anybody could bend those parts. But believe it or not, it does happen.
