i have a 79 johnsons 100 hp with the rectifier type voltage regulation. i just added a volt gauge and believe to beoperating correctly (off a hot lead from ignition). At idle the gauge reports the voltage ouput from t he motor is 16+ volts (the gaugedoesnt peg right away, and in the ignitition 'on' position, it reads 12+ volts.

A rectifier has nothing to do with voltage regulation, all it does is to convert the AC from the stator into "DC". I took a quick glance at the parts diagrams for your engine and it doesn't have a voltage regulator, so you're going to get just what you're seeing. When the voltage starts getting that high you can turn on some lights to bring it down some, and make sure you've got a good battery with proper electrolyte levels.

16 +/- volts is a fact of life with unregulated systems. That's just the way it is. There are many thousands of them running around like that. Don't worry about it.
