Greetings,

Some of you may have been asking yourself, "Who is this character that calls himself, 'Bobber head'". Well read on and wonder no more.

I am 41, semi-married, a small business owner, and avid fisherman. I grew up on the west coast, graduated college with a degree in Fine Art, and like the colour blue.

"Why Am I here?", you may also be asking, as I seem to know nothing of boating, to benifit others, and have only made a few posts of a questionable humorous nature.

And here's the rub. I am now...a real life owner of a boat, for the very first time.
Gone are the days of boating with buddies where if something fell off the boat I could just simply walk away. Never again can I say, "Powered the boat up over the trailer, eh? That's too bad. I'll just walk back to the highway and see you next week".
No now it is my turn in the barrel. It is I who has to haul out all the empty beer cans by myself, at the end of the day. It is I who has to stand in line at the tag agency, and pay money, to be legal. Now it is me trying to seal leaks, recovering the stepped on cushions, scraping the barnicles off the hull late into the wee hours of every night for the rest of my life.

Now, you may be asking yourself, "If he knew all this before buying the boat: why did he buy it?".

The reason is simple: to catch a fish here in Oklahoma, you have to have a boat.

So as you can see, I need all the help I can get, and I believe I have come to the right place.

Bobber head.

PS, she actually paid for the boat and I just learned we don't have Barnicles here in Oklahoma.

Yo Bobberhead, welcome to the world of boat ownership. Do your maintenance and be prepared for the unknown. Best advice I've gotten from this board is " If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I like to tinker with my boat but have found it's best to adhere to this rule.

Re: Introducing myself

Funny, all that blather, and not one word about the stinking boat, eh?

'93 Nitro, 17' DC170. Blue with sparkles. I like the sparkles very much.
115 rude with 22 gallons of gas to match.
Hit's 50 mph easy: but that's measured by the "pressure" speed-O-meter.

One day out, we saw a huge boat. Might quailfy as a ship. Anyway, there were string bikini babes crawling all over this boat/ship as we putted by on the family poontoon. Ron, the semi-brother in-laws', eyes fell out and rolled across the deck.
It was very embarrassing.
The name of that boat/ship was, "The Big Unit".
First time out in The Nitro the swells and wakes and gale winds tossed us around about like the SS Minnow suffered.
We made it back, mostly dry, and named her, "The Tiny Unit".

As for money performing magic tricks, we knew the price of the boat only got our foot in the door to the room in the back where all the broke people sit and brag about the size of their boat.

So wallets aside, with star-crossed expressions, and a sense of wonderment, we thrill in our seats - and boat our way out to the secret fishing hole.

We managed to hit 5 big lakes this fall and had a blast, caught gobs of fish, and not once got sunburned.

Re: Introducing myself

Welcome aboard Bobber Head,

Sounds like you have got the initiation to the world of Boating. I have found out that no matter how nice and considerate your friends are while out on the water, they are never around after the boat is out of the water to help clean up their mess. If I could get them to drink at least 2 more cases of beer, there would be enough recycling money to gas up the boat!

My tip on leaving the annoying fishing buddy behind is this, "Tell them that you forgot something in the tow vehicle, when they take off to go get it, YOU TAKE OFF! It is a mean trick, especially if they rode to the lake with you! I had one guy that did this, and now he is careful on obeying the Captains rules onboard.

One major tip that will save you time and money is NEVER EVER START YOUR ENGINE WITHOUT WATER TO IT!

Good Luck and can't wait to hear when you have the 2 Footeritis! That is a very contagious illness around here!

Re: Introducing myself

Welcome to the board Bobberhead. Every time I see one of your posts, I can't help but think of your head barely bobbing out of the water even with the lifejacket on like you described in the other post. Hilarious and so descriptive, I can see it. We are all first time boaters at some point in our lives. I still consider myself a first time boater. I am self conscious every time I put my boat in. While I only have a small jon boat for fishing, it is exactly what I wanted. Have a great time with the boat, do the maintenance, and enjoy the scenery.

Re: Introducing myself

Welcome, Bobberhead. Did they give you the Boater's Aptitude Test before selling you your first boat? That's the one where you take a $100 bill from your wallet, flush it down the toilet and never change expression. If you pass, you're ready.

Re: Introducing myself

Blue sparkles...Blue sparkles...no wonder they have such an effect on me.

Just guessing, but of 20 gallons of gas: 4 are spent WOT, the rest is trolling - girlfriends favorite thing. So we see a lot of scenery and isn't the view so much better then stuck on the bank?

Funny. The only test I was given was signing my name on some legal papers. I must have spelled my name correctly because I drove off with it.
(Makes me wonder though how some of the iboaters here would ever pull it off, if spelling your name correctly was an actual test? POke Poke)

I am NOT olfishnfart!

Ok, off to the docs for a shot agianst the deadly "2 footeritis": whatever that is, it sounds nasty. And it's true I sink like a stone - when I was very young I had to sleep in a PFD to keep from drowning...well you know all that Ovaltine...

Re: Introducing myself

Boy, this place is a barrel of Monkeys. I feel right at home, thanks.

Have a wooden oar under my boat seat and a kyak paddle here next to the computer for surfing iboats. Guess which gets more use?

"semi married" means we live like married people but have not filed the proper papers to be legally married. No wedding that is. Also, she liked the term much better then the prior one of "current significant other".

She paid hard cash for the boat out of her deep pockets. However, I did pay for the new key chain bobber/floatie. Funny how it just worked out that way.

I picked up several odd things while in England that I have trouble shaking.
--------------
