This is my first time puting the outdrive back in and it is just not going in all the way. Is there a certain position the it has to be in? (Neutral Foward or Reverse)

Re: Installing out drive on mercruser

Let me guess. You line up the shaft and it goes in all the way except for about 1/2 inch.

The shifter cable has to be in the forward gear.

Make sure that the shifter cables mate (on the lower unit) is facing the correct position. (perpendicular to the transom).

If this is lined up, it will get you in that last bit.

If lining up the shafts are a problem, I used to have someone JUST TAP the ignition key as I put inward pressure on the lower unit.

No two ways about it; Mercruisers are tough.
