I was recently given a 22 1/2' cruiser. Can't remember what make is now.
Anyways, my friend who gave it to me took the carb off it last spring. I had a look at it and it appears to have rust in it now.
Question is....am I going to have to completely redo the motor now, or is it no good now and will need replacing?
I have a friend who thinks we can rip it apart and fix it, but I am skeptical about this. Apperently there was major work done on the motor 2 years ago, but to what extent, I don't know. I don't mind spending money on it since I have not spent a dime on it yet. A free boat, what else can I ask for.
Any opinions out there.
It is an inline 6, fresh water cooled.

You will most likely have to do a complete rebuild/overhaul on that engine if theres rust in any of the cylinders or anywhere else for that matter...

Can it be repaired?.. Maybe yes, maybe no... The only way to tell is to tear into it and inspect the damage..

It's highly likely you'll be visiting your local machine shop to have the cylinders bored out to clean them up, and the cylinder head will likely need some serious attention.. Possibly have to machine the crankshaft as well.. All depends on the damage..

I would check prices for both repairing and replacing the engine as it may end up being less expensive to replace than repair...

Also, a bit of a long shot but, check your local auto salvage yards as they may have a running engine laying around.. Who knows???

OR, If the Hole in the manifold Hasn't been collecting Water(rain, etc) since the carb was removed... It's Possible that All it needs is a Carb.,+ a little gas.....
Pull the plugs,+ see what you can see... How dos it turn over ?? Do a Compression Check, That'll Tell you Alot.... Pull the dip stick.. What do ya See..???
Snapperbait has offered the Worst Case....
I'm looking for the Best Case....
But, You won't Know, Till you Look....

Well you can tear it down or what I would try first is to put the carb back on(rebuild if ness.)get some fresh fuel and flash it up. Run it for a while and check the compression and oil pressure(with a manual test gauge ,don't rely on the one at the helm). As long as the water hasn't filled up the cyl.'s there shouldn't be any probblems.

Re: inline 6....need new one?

thanks guys, I am going to try to start it up once I take a real good look at the plugs and all around it.
I guess it can't hurt to TRY to start it, if everything seems okay.
Hopefully I will be able to get time in the next few days to do this.
I will keep you guys posted as to what happens and I will probably need some help from you experts, once I figure out if this one needs replacing or not.
Thanks for the replies.

Re: inline 6....need new one?

Before you try to start it, pull all the sparkplugs out and give each cylinder a shot of some kind of oil(wd-40 will do) thru the spark plug hole... Mark the plug wires as not to get them mixed up...

While all of the plugs are out, put a socket on a large ratchet or breaker bar and try to turn the crankshaft via the harmonic balancer bolt.. Give the engine three or four complete turns... If it turns fairly easy and does'nt stick then try starting it..

If you tried to start it and it was froze up, you might end up tearing up a good starter or flywheel... ;)

thanks snapperbait, I will do those things before I start the motor.
We'll see what happens.
