Lake Hartwell is a fantastic lake, and it's on the Georgia/South Carolina state line. Hartwell's also a very large lake with 56,000 acres and 962 miles of shoreline. The lake is just about an hour from the edge of Atlanta proper, so that makes it very popular with the "big city folk" that cannot afford houses on Lake Lanier. Needless to say that shopping in Atlanta is popular for Anderson citizens.

The Anderson/Clemson/Greenville/Spartanburg area is almost like one big city, and the area is one of the more progressive mid size job markets in the U.S. The area has a distinct personality, with the big mountains a few miles to the north and a number of lakes in the area. There are a bunch of golf/country club communities in the foothills and up on the mountain, and Gary Player liked it so well he moved there with his golf course architectural firm. The people tend to be split between Clemson fans, and "Carolina" fans (U. of S.C.)--with Clemson being close by Anderson.

I hate to tell you, but coming from the flatlands of Illinois--they'll never get you out of those mountains. It's a great place to live, and a great place to retire to. And there's reasonable priced real estate in the area and a relatively low cost of living. Be thankful that the company is moving you there, as you'll certainly enjoy the better weather of the South.

While I live on the Tennessee River, I still keep a recreational vehicle in the NE Georgia Mountains @ Helen, GA. We're about an hour away from this area of South Carolina. We take day trips to Franklin, NC and The Highlands. And we do some white water rafting in the area. Deliverance was filmed on the Chattooga River, which is north of Anderson--but the people were fictional.

Its a beautiful lake close to the mountains but its had a problem with drought and low water levels over the past several years. In fact the whole area has been in a drought for awhile. From what I've read now it has come back up substantially but I haven't been through it in a couple months to see where it actually is. Full pool is supposed to be 660 and according to the Army corps' website its at 655 or so.
Its large and spread out and has a lot of camping if you are into that.

I lived in Athens, GA about a dozen years ago, but didn't own a boat then. Some friends would take me out and from what I remember Hartwell is pretty nice. Being a passenger I can't give you much beyond that. I do know that it seems to have never quite recovered from a major drought several years ago, and the parts you can see from US 85 look really low. I drive down that way a couple times a year and a lot of the boat houses are still on dry land (this is pretty far from the dam).

we typically go to Lake Keowee or Jocasee which are the two lakes above Hartwell. Between the three lakes there is no shortage of all types of fishing and there are a number of campgrounds and some waterside restaurants that are great spots. The mountains views are great too! The lakes are down some right now but with all the rain we have had they are picking up. We love the area and it would take alot for us to move away from this area.

Well if you are a son of the South, you should be really thrilled about moving to Anderson. Rural Illinois is about farming, but I'm a boater, not a farmer.

When you put the cities together, NW SC is not too big and it's not too small. All of your needs will be covered.

And when you get bored, you're in Gwinnett County and the Mall of Georgia less than 90 miles. The SC state line is 75 miles from Lawrenceville/Buford exit.

You absoloutly must go out around the Clemson campus area. I had the pleasure of attending school there and being able to boat out on Lake Hartwell. There is nothing better than taking your boat out on the lake, parking it on a beach, tailgating, and attending a football game in a stadium that holds over 80,000 people. You will also find a bunch of great spots and friendly people on this lake, whether you want to relax of party. While the mountain views on this lake are spectacular, the most spectacular lake is Lake Jocassee, about an hour north. This lake is made up of mountain runoff, and boasts beautiful runoff and clear blue water. Lake Keowee is right above Hartwell, and

Once you experience the crystal clear waters of Lake Jocassee, you may prefer it to Lake Hartwell. Jocassee is the first in a chain of lakes leading from their source in the mountains, starting clear and pristine and becoming increasingly turbid and muddy as you follow the chain South, ending up flowing through Savannah, Ga. and into the Atlantic.

Re: info on lake hartwell near Anderson SC

I boat on Hartwell almost every weekend it is called the "Great Lake of the South" while it is not as busy as Lanier it can get pretty crowded during the height of the summer. The water is Clear compared to all the middle Georgia lakes. Lake Russell is just below Hartwell and virtually deserted even on the weekend due to the Core Policy of no private docks other than marinas and boat ramps. We boat on both and really enjoy both. We also hit Keowee, and venture into the mountains to Chatuge and Burton. Once you see these beautiful mountain lakes you will forget all about the midwest.
