Howdy, Crab Bait.

Saw someone do exactly the same thing years ago. Since then I have always towed with a 4x4 or AWD. After reading your tale I am going to contact MB and see if they can mount a front winch on my ML320.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: in the pond truck an all

no doubt. when you need a pull, therz no1 around... i didn't post my experience, since it isn't really related to boating, but when living in S GA, i got stuck several times in various places. i still don't have a bumper winch, only a come-along like u mentioned.
the funniest time(for others) was when i had an ole buddy visit. i wanted to show him the mtns(since he'd lived in the swamps), and decided to go thru the local(mountainous)WMA burn trails, in order to cross the trout stream in an isolated spot. i had been thru it many times in my ole ranger truck. but i had a toyota with an air intake behind the headlight, and it had rained the week b4....
well, when we came off the ridge, there was no turning back, hit the stream and found it was 2ft higher than normal, which put the water middle of grill... so my truck died.
we opened doors and water came inside this new truck (14kmi). pushed it to far bank, where it required a running start to make it up the other ridge... walked 5mi out of the forest, found a 4WD to pull us out finally. when we got over the ridge, i let the clutch out to jumpstart- only dragged tires! next day found the cylinders full of water. won't go on, but with some duralube sessions, i still drive the truck- 240K on it now... :D

Back in my jeep cj days we keep a big boat anchor on the bumper right beside the winch. Get stuck can't find a tree or it was out of reach of the cable. Just dig a hole and drop in the anchor. Had a buddy that kept a mobile home tie down with him for the same thing.
Question for you. How much HP was on the boat behind you? Before getting down to the frame on you truck did you try to use the boat to help push you out? (ok that was two)

Re: in the pond truck an all

Here is one that I saw and I still don't really believe it.

I was at Folsom Lake in Sacramento, CA. The lake was real low cause of a drought. there was only one ramp toughing the water and they made a channel out to the lake. Well, Folsom Lake is a sand/silt kind of bottom. Off to the side of the ramp and at the top of the lowest ramp was a pretty flat area with a little creek/spring running through it. There was a guy and his family/friends in a brand new F-250 4X4, he was zooming all over the place until he tried to cross this creek that I swear wasn't wider than the truck was long. He started accross and sunk right up to the frame.

Several other guys tried to pull him out and got stuck too.

He finally called AAA and the tow truck they sent out couldn't pull him out, the tow truck was being pulled tward the creek. So a bigger tow truck (Semi) came out and told this guy that it was $150.00 per hookup cash only.

The tow truck driver hooked up and pulled the truck out of the holes. The driver of the F-250 jumped out and unhooked the cable and drove the rear wheels into the holes from the front wheels and sunk in again.

The tow truck driver walked up and hooked up again (Another $150.00) and pulled him out of the holes again. The driver if the F-250 dis connected the cable again and got stuck again.

The tow truck driver again hooked up (Another $150.00) and instead of using the winch to pull him out, this time he got inside the tow truck and pulled the F-250 completely out and a little further before stopping.

I think that the driver of the F-250 was "Too Stupid To Live".

The tow truck driver left with $450.00 and was smilling. I still laugh everytime I think about that day.

Re: in the pond truck an all

This may help someone. I drive a f250 diesel and i have more hitch's then the store. I have a 5th w, horse trailer, rear hitch and the one i like best is a front hitch. Tried to buy one to no avail had one made. I mount winch on an insert and i can take the winch from front to back or back to front with plugs at each end. I can take the front hitch and put a camper or boat through an opening with 1 inch clearence.may help someone to think about front hitch's.

Re: in the pond truck an all

Another funny towing story.

Years ago two 4x4's were playing on the Canadian River near Norman, OK. One got stuck so his buddy chained up to him. Now both are stuck. Local tow truck company sticks one of its own pulling at them, sends second unit. It gets stuck too. Finally a nearby farmer shows up with a WWII vintage duece and a quarter and several hundred feet of cable he was making a fence out of. He proceeds to pull everyone free in just a couple of pulls. Tow truck company gives bill for two trucks at several hours to drivers of 4x4. They say forget it, the farmer pulled us out. Company says since their lines were attached to the stranded vehicle as it was pulled out they get the fee. Farmer comes over to see what is going on. Farmer informs tow service that if they bill the 4x4's for a job they couldn't do he would bill the tow company for his services.
Tow truck company relents and everyone goes away happy, except the tow truck drivers that did not want to play out a lot of winch line.

Re: in the pond truck an all

To you all Ford guys...I had an '89 F 150 4x4, my and my wife were roaming Wyoming prairies and stopped to check an old barn. Right in the middle of nowhere, barely a trail to get there. When I stopped the truck I noticed front tire got stuck in a rabbit hole (or maybe prairie dog) approx 10"/12" wide and 6" to 8" deep. Well "..it's a 4x4.." I thought, so we visited area. When was time to leave, I locked hubs, put in 4x4 and.....nothing, stupid truck kept spinning 1 opposite wheel. I guess it needed a level surface or just few inches of traveling (which we didn't have) to "kick" in 4x4.....Well, you won't believe how many miles we walked before we saw a ranch...and it was embarassing admitting we were stuck....in a rabbit hole.

Thank you FORD....now I own a Dodge.

Val

Re: in the pond truck an all

Some friends of mine recently made a trip to south florida with an AirBoat. On the way home, driving up I-75, they run out of gas. Driver stays seated, partner gets on the airboat, and pushes the whole rig nearly 10 miles to a station! I'm still not sure that I believe him, but he tells it for the truth.

Re: in the pond truck an all

I quite nearly had the same thing happen.....
Just Last week my buddy and I were out on the lake fishin'. Got finished (COLD! We had to break ice just to launch boat! ) We are loading the boat and had to back in farther than normal to get front hooked up. The boat was floating so much that Mark was holding it with the oar to keep it centered on the trailer. I pulled up and got out to look and make sure we were centered. When the door of my '94 Chev Ext cab hit me I knew something was wrong! I was lucky enough to get in and hold the brakes (peddle on the floor! ). I stuck it in 4WD and tried to pull up. No Posi-trac! Rear wheel spinning on right side! The only thing I could do was let it roll alittle to engage the 4WD. By this time the lake is in the back of the bed. It did engage and we pulled free! We still laugh about this one! After we cleaned out our jeans! :)

Hey there Fisher_OB next time one wheel starts spinning just apply the brake lightly this will confuse the rear end and power will alternate to the other side. Just an old trick for getting skiers "unstuck" here in VT.

Bob :D

Just waiting for all the ice to clear from the lake.

Re: in the pond truck an all

during a local bass tournament a few years ago, my brother shakes hands with a crankbait a little too hard, barb buried deep in his hand. no prob, run him to shore and to the local doctor to remove (all we had was 8# test, no wire!). backed the truck down too far and felt the rear wheels sink. just spin in forward. get out of truck through window, wade through bed after putting on hip waders and step in to the chest deep water. unhook trailer, walk it out of the water and tie it to a tree. run winch cable down to truck and with brother in drivers seat start winching truck and promptly snap cable. stuck brother, sunk truck and broken trailer in 7 minutes flat. did i mention the water was about 52 degrees?
