I have a 2001 volvo penta 5.0gl that was damaged and leaves me looking for a replacement. I have found several vendors, but are they all equal? I can get a replacement from a national company (that starts with a "J") that remanifactures car and boat engines for a $1000 more than a local distributor of another brand. They both claim to use brand new parts such as pistons, rings,pumps.ect. Is this where I should splurge or should I save the money and use it towards my fuel? Thanks Greg

A know a lot of guys here speak highly of Rapido... I personally would look into buying a new crate engine straight from GM - either through Jegs or Summitracing or even Pace Chevy. The price is usually comparable with rebuilt.

I got my 5.7 engine nearly complete with electronic IGN, Edelbrock 1409 carb, and new OSCO manifolds and risers for $2900.

I've put almost 160 or so hours on it since July when I bought and installed it.

Company was Daddyo's Marine in Ft Lauderdale.

But depending on your situation you might could get by with a long block.

You can check out the national places and see...for instance Rapido has generally positive reviews.

I would also suggest seeing who has a good reputation locally. If your block and everything else checks good your local shop can likely take care of you at a competitive price. And if there are any issues in the future you can pay the guy a visit and get it squared away.

I understand shopping on price, but I've heard a few horror stories recently about engines not being built correctly by production shops (wrong compression, wrong clearances, etc.) and my experience has been that local guys tend to put in the little extra since reputation is a big part of their staying in business. Not that there aren't bad shops locally, or great production houses, just my experience with attention to detail.

I just got my Rapido, so I can't say how it runs yet, but if they took as much care in rebuilding the engine as they took to build the crate it was shipped in, I am sure there will be no issues.
