Instead of hooking up ear muffs to my I/O Mercrusier 4.3L ( Sea Ray 185 BR) why can't I just lower the stern drive into a oil barrel of water for a couple of minutes.Any problem with this as long as I make sure I have the lower stern unit submerged and I don't gun the engine?
P Sully

No problem at all just make sure the water level does not drop below the water pickup.

Re: In place of muffs

If you've ever had your drive off, you may have noticed that the actuall w/p housing sits just above the seam of the gear case and drive shaft housing. If you just put the drive in enough water to just cover the intake holes, you are going to overheat your pump. That pump is not designed to pull water up from those intakes. When the motor is on the flush, city water pressure forces water up to the pump. In water, the pump is below the surface of the water, and on plane water is forced into the intake and up to the pump by the forward motion of the boat.

If you are going to run it in a "bucket", then make sure the water level of the bucket is well above the seam of the gearcase and drive shaft housing.

Scott..
