I replaced the impellar for the first time today....

After having the outdrive off, and re installing it...

then removing the lower end, gave me a better understanding of how it works.

Since the impellar is turned by the same shaft that ultimately turns the prop...

I"m using the only time water is being sucked in is if the prop is turning?

Is that right?

Seems odd to me...does it cause over heating if the boat is idle'ing but not moving?

Can you over heat by sitting idle'ing too long?

That shaft turns whenever the engine is running. When you put it in F or R the clutch dog engages the gear and turns the prop shaft.

You get water either way.

theres a youtube video that shows a lower unit with a cut out. It shows how the clutch dog moves and engages F or R when you shift. Ill see if I can find it.
