Newer is not always better and in some instances worse. So, don't swap just because you want a "better" ignition. In fact both ignitions are the same. While I am not up on nthe years, the 89 will have ignition connections made on a terminal board while the 87 MIGHT have quick-connect electricals. Personally, I prefer the quick-connect version.

If you are handy at splicing wires, you can convert either system to be compatible with the other's components.

actually my cdi's got shorted out and they had a whole system on ebay for 50 bucks coils stator pick up flywheel the whole deal had the red mecury stator know where i can get 2 black cdi's cheap
