My Brother is moving up and is selling me his 1973 24' very clean Sea Ray. The boat is in Southern Michigan and I live in Oregon. The boat doesn't have a triler. Estimates to have a boat mover bring it over are around $3,000... more than I can afford. I'm considering buying a trailer in Mich., flying over then towing it with a rental truck...if anyone rents such a vehicle? Or, would it be better to have a trucker haul boat and trailer on a flat bed? Anyone coming this way? Has anyone moved a boat cross country for reasonable amount of money? I would appreciate any ideas!
Thanks,Mel

Do you have a vehicle that would safely tow up to 10,000 lb? If so I would drive to MI, buy a used trailer and tow it back. Otherwise the rental truck idea sounds good to me. A good trailer and gas would cost less than the boat mover. Before I settled on that, though, I would get a bid to truck both boat and trailer to OR. Good luck.

I brought a boat from Mass. to Maryland. I bought a trailer. You can rent a truck from a dealer. You can not tow with trucks from Hertz, Avis etc. Unless its there trailer.

Hello JB and itsbouttime

Thank you for taking the time to help me fiqure out how to get a boat from Michigan to Oregon. It's looking like I may buy a trailer in Mich, fly there, rent a truck, then tow it to Oregon if I don't find a truck to carry both boat and trailer for a reasonable price.
itsabouttime, when you mention "dealer" do you know of anyone that rents a truck that I could rent to tow a boat one way (Mich. to Oregon)?
Thank you both again!
Mel

Thanks Sam
I thought the rental moving van com****** would only approve you hauling their own trailers?
If Penske allows boat hauling, I'll go with them.
Thank you
Mel

Hi Sam

I appreciate your help in trying to get this mystery solved.

I'm having a difficult time finding a used tandom axle trailer for sale in the Southern Michigan area for a reasonable price.
There appears to be a shortage of good used trailers so one good almost buy new one for a little more money... to much for me :-(

I'm considering building a support of some kind to transport on an 18 wheeler flatbed coming this way and am looking for the dimensions ie where to support the hull, angles etc. on the internet without much success.
I haven't given up yet!
Mel

Hey, Melbig. I don't know why I didn't think of this before. Take the summer off. Cruise the boat to Chicago and down the canal to the Mississippi, down the Mississippi and the Intracoastal to Brownsville, Texas. Then brave the Gulf to Panama, through the canal to the Pacific and, finally, up the coast to Oregon. Finance the whole thing by writing articles, taking pictures and producing videotapes of your great adventure for National Geographic and the Speedvision channel. Get them to advance you the bucks to do the trip.

Well, at least it was a new idea. What else has worked so far? It's the kind of audacious project that just might work!

Good luck to you, Mel. I thought you might like a laugh.

JB

Mel,

I just rented a U-Haul two days ago to trailer my boat. Boat is about 3700lbs and rented a truck for 19.95 a day plus 14.95 for insurance then $1/mile.

Note the insurance is to cover damage on the truck you should insure your boat and trailer prior to the trip of course

Mr. horsepower: The boat is located in Algonac Michigan (near Detroit) and the destination is Portland Oregon or Wilsonville (about 20 miles south of Portland)

CXrob:I thought U-haul (and others) didn't allow anything to be towed unless it was their own trailer?

And JB, great idea traveling by water, but I did the math and the fuel came to $37,621.46, great idea and a great trip but that ol' boat just isn't worth it ;-)
Mel

Mel,

I asked U-Haul and they didn't seem to care... I did it and returned the truck no issues. Could be different if your traveling halfway across the country.

In addition to your $37 in fuel cost to ride it around you neglected to inculde your toll fee thru the canal thats probably another $15K at best.

Re: Ideas? For moving boat from Michigan to Oregon

Mel-

Last May (2000)...I towed a 20' foot Mako from Aransas Pass, Texas to Boston, MA with a UHAUL truck... a trip of about 2,200 miles. The dealer paid my airfare so I did not have to worry about it...just the truck rental.

My first recommendation is to call UHAUL and Penske and negotiate prices for them during mid-month (cheaper because most people move during the beginning or end of the month). Uhaul originally quoted me $900 and I called Penske and the quoted me $650 and then I called UHAUL back and told them PENKSE quoted me $425 (Yes, I lied) and could they beat or match their price. Uhaul said the best they could do was $380 (one-way....which included about 2,300 miles). This was fine by me! When you call them I would not tell them about the boat ( I didn't...because most of the larger UHAULS have a 2" inch ball welded on the frame) Just make sure you get a big enough UHAUL to tow your boat....a 20 footer should do the job. You'll need to hook-up the trailer lights to the special UHAUL lights with an $8 adapter that they sell at the big UHAUL stores.

Also, to make this trip worth while..you need to do it on the cheap, so-to-speak, or it will cost you the same as if you paid someone else.. I slept in the truck the first night, treated myself to a $65 hotel room and shower the 2nd night and drove through the night on the 3rd night and pulled into Boston around 6:30 am.

It was tiring but I saw a lot of the country and I would definitely do it again. I can sell my boat in the Boston area for double of what I paid for it so it was worth the trip.

Regarding the trailers, Michigan has the highest number of registered boats in the country..about 700,000 so you should not have trouble finding a trailer. Keep looking..one will turn up.

Good luck

Re: Ideas? For moving boat from Michigan to Oregon

If you do a little searching on the internet you should be able to find a boat manufacturer near Oregon who either delivers or has his boats delivered to the great lakes region which means he will be coming back empty. I have done this on several occasions and they will bring it back for a very reasonable price. This is known as back hauling. These com****** usually have the best of equipment and are insured and bonded.
Its a no fuss deal done by professionals and it should be less than half what you were quoted.
Any boat builder on the west coast would probably do this for you. Good Luck....

The last reponse was right on plus the fact that we have a lot of lumber going out of the region on flatbeds with no return loads. Check wuth your local freight com******,the smaller the better and see what you can scare up.
