10" is plenty of ice. The ice table for Lake Simcoe is

4 Inches (10 cm) …..…………………………..One Person
4.4-5 Inches (10 - 11.5 cm)……………………Small Group, Spread Out In Single File
7 - 9 Inches (18 - 23 cm)………………………ATV or Snowmobile

A friend of mine lives in Rochester Hills, MI and is in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He says that happens 2 or 3 times every winter on Lake St Clair. The Coast Guard goes out and rescues them, but makes them leave all their equipment - sleds, huts, tackle, etc - behind. They also charge them the cost of the rescue.

So I'd say these guys were pretty lucky.

It's just a screwy year this year in MN where that story is from given our over the top record high temps one week then normal then record. Add wind and variable conditions and this happens sometimes. None the less, we have had several people go through the ice this season on cars and four wheelers and some of them died. Common sense seems to be missing this year. It has been a while since we have had to really even consider ice safety in January. January usually means you can drive your semi on the ice if you want to. Some of our lakes have essentially small towns with maintained roads on them this time of year in most years.

Living in Rochester and fishing here on St. Clair your story rings true about people who temp the weather and then when the crap hits the fan call the coast gaurd or cops, is a topic that many discuss here. The only problem is they are not charged for this service and many of the same faces are picked up more than once. I think the rule is, first time no charge, but then after that they may charge you, and it sure isnt cheap. But when they report it,they put the "cost spin" on it, just like any media would. You are correct about not being able to grab any equipment, it stays out on the ice. I have some stories from old timers about bad ice and near death experiences, many of them. I have never been recued, and never fallen through either, no fish is worth that.
