To all the ice dwellers,
What type of heater do you use to heat your permanent shack? I'm looking for a vented propane heater.....any ideas?
It does not have to be many btu's, the shack is very well insulated.
thanks
Dman
Dman
the best heaters i could find that are portable
and vented are the old style space heaters
used for natural gas applications and are easily
converted to propane. If you cant find any of those , you can use small heaters from travel trailers. just make a tin box to carry them in.
They work excellent as heaters for fishing shacks.
Also popular are small wood stoves you can buy new for $60.00 doesnt take much wood to keep you
warm.
Hey I am into all sorts of fishing but i can't figure ice fishing. What I need to know if how exactly do you set the hook into the ice cube?
For my winter fishing is a portable propane heater. They have them like mine that is a stand alone unit that takes a small propane bottle inside but I would most likely get one of those that you screw to the top of the bottle. They are radiant heaters and don't shoot out a flame. On my carport I made a barrel wood-burning stove that would also be an option it cost me about $50 for the parts kit and I used a barrel from my wife's work. You would also need flashing for running the stovepipe through the roof all of which you can get at the local hardware store. All it costs me to run is effort for wood and it will burn hardwoods for a long time and can raise the temp in an enclosed area from 30 to about 60 in no time flat. This would be the cheapest option BTW so you may want to look into it. NH Northern Catalog has the kits but i could get mine at Ace Hardware cheaper and no shipping charges.
I'm looking for something along these lines. It's hard to believe that Strikemaster is the only company on the web that sells these types of heaters. I can't find any like this....

http://www.strikemaster.com/heaterlazer.html
Not many manufactures for ice hut heaters .
All the shacks i have seen use the type of heaters already suggested, including my own.
The strikemaster heaters are the same concept
just ready to use out of the box.
Has anyone used the anvil shaped heaters? Scheel's carries them. Besides that and the Strikemaster, they has tough to find. About how long can they run on a 5 gal propane tank?
DMan
Dman
propane is sold by the pound in a portable tank.
5lb , 10lb , 20lb ,30lb and up.
3000 btu's will burn approx 6 to 8 hrs for 1lb
15000 btu's a 5lb tank will last approx 6 to 8 hrs.

unless you buy it differently there.
Remember one thing about propane, it has a boiling point around -30*F. So depending on where your fishing and the temp, the colder it gets, the less heat you'll get. I like wood heat, but than again, I rent my cabins and don't have to lug the wood!
