That water was too rough to be going even close to that. My rule of thumb is if I start bouncing the power gets cut and motor trimmed down a little. You can tell that when he was bucking the waves he was staying WIDE OPEN. And that hull looks like it will beat you to death with no real keel in the front. To me that's what separates the fast bass boats from the smooth riding ones. That's why I own a Charger because of the insanely deep keel in the front.

At the one minute mark notice how he nearly bought the farm then. My friends Stratos has a similar hull design and will try to do the same thing if the nose digs too far into the water at higher speeds.

That's a video that's been circulating for a while. It's my understanding that that was a water test by the boat mfg co., or someone. I read he's a pro test driver somewhere.

One time we were out on Ouachita fishing and there was a boat in the distance zipping around really fast. It was a bass boat with a larger v6 (250-300hp).

My buddy: Hey Chris you know why that guy is zipping around like that?

Me: No, why?

My buddy: Because he can!

It's kind of a bad example for wearing your life vest and kill switch, as the guy was clearly above the safe speed for the conditions. It makes you think that you only need to wear the vest when screwing around.

What Beefer said. The guy who crashed is not the moron; it's the ones who don't learn from this who are.

You see how that guy was workin the wheel in his little fly by, he was trying to make it look so dramatic, like trying to make it look outa control, hot doggin can be costly.

You may be right I watched it a couple times, either way that boat didn't look real happy going that fast, I bet he wished he had a helmet too I bet he has a heck of a lump on his head after that wipe out.

Re: I think this guy messed up his boat

This guy didn't have much common sense to be crossing a wake at 70 mph. I don't care if he's a professional tester or some 20 year old on a jetski. I'd be concerned about my safety if I was on that water the same day.
I've seen the video dozens of times, and I understand he would have been toast without that killswitch and PFD, and they posted this as a lesson for people. However, he was an idiot himself. Can't really defend him in this case because it could have cost him his life, or someone else's if there was anyone else nearby

If I cross someone's wake at even 30 mph, it's a hard hit even on a bowrider. I can't imagine what it'd be like in a bass boat at 70 mph. Ouch!

i think that video is a good teaching tool.

right after that video came out, 2 fella's at my local watering hole died from being ejected from a bass boat at high speed. one got chopped up, the other from being knocked out by the boat. it just circled them at wot and kept coming back to get them, which it did after the third time around... very sad..

It's dangerous out there.. I try to stay away from the idiots.. My rig is fast enough to get away from them.. I try and keep a eye out.. It woulda been a dangerous day on that lake with that guy going that fast..

I don't get it...If he was an experienced "pilot", why didn't he know to slow down crossing the wake?
Was he trying to crash?

Evperienced or not, I bet he don't do it again. Idiot.

I would like to mention (correct me if I'm wrong) but with some setups quickly throttling down can flip the boat. An old buddy of mine used to race and if he where to to do that the noze will dig in and it will go end over end. This was with a foot throttle.

I'll never understand why they put such huge engines on Bass boats. The hull design doesn't look the greatest for hitting any kind of waves, esp at high speed. I thought they were designed for stabillity at rest... That crash reminded me of that video out of a drag boat that does the exact same thing and ends up in pieces.

Re: I think this guy messed up his boat

A modern bass boat is a high performance boat. Like a high performance car, it can be driven past safe conditions. It is also very sensitive to the condition of everything from the gel coat to the tightness of motor mounts. Like a high performance car with bad shocks, a bass boat with the wrong steering in it gets dangerous. Like a high performance car which is easily destroyed by overdriving it on a mountain road, a bass boat driven in a wreckless manner can go out of control.

A high performance bass boat driven by a good driver is a beautiful machine, all the way around. One driven by an idiot is scary and dangerous. The video shown here is a classic example of too much testosterone and not enough brain cells.

Trimmed out a bass boat will normally nose up in the air and skip across on its back side. I know I have to trim mine all the way down when shutting down while feathering the throttle to keep my back end from getting wet. Just part of driving a boat with the back end low to the water.
