I have a two fold question about an older Johnson

I am new to boating and have just purchased my first boat. It is an 87 Cimmaron 15ft with an older 100 hp Johnson outboard. I have a few questions about it.#1 The motor and the throttle both say "Hydro Electric Drive" on it. What does this mean? #2 The boat does NOT have electric tilt and trim. How should the motor be tilted? There are about 8 alignment holes on the engine for tilt adjustment, I have tried the one farthest away from the boat and it stood the nose way up and never plained out, I tried another hole about two adjustments in and it seemed to bog the engine down. #3 How responsive should the throttle be? When I open the throttle all the way up, it takes about 30-45 seconds for the boat to respond. You can hear a load on the engine and the boat is SLOWLY gaining speed, but it takes a minute or so to get going. Does this have anything to do with the hydroelectric drive. #4 The throttle feels to me like it is sticking. When you go to throttle down, you can't do it easy. It is all or nothing.
The engine has just been tuned up, carbs cleaned and throttle adjusted. Any ideas will be apprectiated.
Thanks

Re: I have a two fold question about an older Johnson

Welcome to the wonderful world of boating, Barry.
1. Hydro-Electric Drive was the hydro-electric shifting of the gears.

2. If you don't have power trim and don't plan to add it (I would), set the engine so that the anti-ventilation plate, also called the cavitation plate is parallel with the keel of the boat.

3. Even an elderly 100 in good running order should launch that little Cimmaron like a dragster. You have either a misbehaving engine or a very badly matched prop. . . maybe both. Ten seconds to plane is sort of a standard, like ten seconds to 60 in your car, of "decent" performance. To solve this one you will need to report mph and rpm numbers to the board. I will be gone for about 10 days.

4. Your throttle should respond smoothly, going up or down. Look for a kink in the cable somewhere.

Hmmm. I thought this was a two-part question.

Red Sky at night....
JB

I've got a 1970 60 Horse with eltro-shift. There's a nob on top of the throttle box that adjusts the tension of the throttle at the box. Might help with sticking throttle.

Ice
