I feel like an idiot for having to ask this question, but never seen this before....

A friend of mine sent me his 1980 Larson, it has a belly tank in it. The problem is, he just had the floor replaced, and the tank cleaned, and now past 2000RPM's the 470 MerCruiser feels like it runs out of fuel. Pull the throttle back, and it catches and runs, but sometimes dies. He told me about the tank after I went through the carb, and replaced the fuel pump as it failed the tests. It still runs out of fuel. My question is, I look at the tank, and I see two 1/4 pipe "pickups" (I've never seen this before) One looks like it's a welded bunghole, while the other is on a plate with screws around it. Nothing else. The anti-siphon valve is in the one that is just a 1/4 pipe fitting. Which of these two is the real fuel tank pickup? Thanks in advance.

My tank has two pickups, one for main the other for reserve. The reserve pickup tube is several inches longer to reach the last few gallons of gas. Could the plate with screws around it be the sender unit?

I understand your dilemma, have not seen this my self. As in my pic this is the way I see it. Could remove the sender and look inside to see which is which. Other then that can apply some air to the ports to see if the exit on top or below

Running out of fuel could still be the ASV if slowing down helps brings it back
