has anyone here ever had one? what was you're experience with them like?

im asking out of curiousity because i just accquired a free motor. a 1970 (?) 55 hp. i've had two in the past and would never ever spend money on one again. the first one was a 90. on my larson. we bought the boat, put it in the water and a fuel line broke. fixed that then 2 days later a ring expoded and severly scored the cylider wall and peices of the ring melted to the top of the piston.

the second one was a 35 hp. it kicked something in the lower unit and jumped gears like crazy. then a few months into the season snapped a rod.

i got this motor off of a buddy and im told it runs good, and i have a 16 ft ebbtide bowrider i think im going to use it on. But im concerned with the reliability of the motor because its going to be for my 15 year old cousin.

what have your experiences been like with these motors ???

Mine is a 45hp chrysler from 1967. Runs great and have only had minor problems with it in the last 5 years. Only problem is finding parts for it when you need them. The only work I have had to do was replace diaphram in fuel pump, rebuild carb and replace fuel lines. Nice thing about them is they are pretty simple to work on.

I don't think you will start a war; because I suspect others, who have had older Chrysler outboards probably have had some very bad experiences too. (Are they still made?) In the mid 1970's the department I worked for bought a new Chrysler skiff with a 25-hp Chrysler outboard and all we ever did with that engine was work on it. If that engine had more than 25 hours on it when it was surveyed, I would be surprised! I spent so much time paddling that skiff back to the dock you would have thought it was a canoe. On the bright side,..... your cousin is going to become a fine mechanic.

no they arent made anymore i dont believe.

and the ebbtide has been sitting in my backyard for about 4 years without power. its been under a cover and its in good shape, I just want it the hell out of here !!!!

so it looks like i'll bolt it up and if he beats it until it catches fire or puts a rod through the block, so be it. I'd rather have that happen than all the little things every other day because ill be the one that will be working on it constantly.

i dont know, ive just never had good experiences with them

Decarb frequently.
Use plenty of oil in fuel- deal with the smoke.
Keep everything adjusted and maintained properly.
Get what you can out of it.
Bury it deep when it dies.

A slipping clutchdog in the lower unit will put lots of stress on the upper drivetrain, and may have caused your broken "rod?". An adjustment of the shift linkage may have prevented it.

what i meant by "rod" was that the piston was no longer moving. maybe a wristpin ??? i never tore it apart, i sold it for parts.
To me it really wasnt worth it to rebuild it.

and thats what i had planned on doing, letting him run it into the ground

I don't know if it is any help but I had a 9.2 hp Chrysler for about 1.5 yrs and ran it daily. It also had electric start and a small generator...something unheard of in 1972 on that size outboard. It quickly developed corrosion and started getting water in the cyls. This was after a few hundred hours and 6 mos of fast running. It wasn't flushed because we were cruising in the Bahamas and away from docks and fresh water. It started and ran good until water worked its way in. A teardown showed the block just wasted away from the saltwater. I installed zincs on the motor so know it wasnt electrolysis.
In comparison, I replaced it with a new 1976 4 hp Johnson and did another cruise. That motor never gave problems.

Re: i dont want to start a war here, but chrysler outboards.

I had a 74 model Chrysler 55 horse years ago. I was on my first boat. It ran quite well. The only problem I really had was the flywheel key kept shearing and the key also fit into the eccentric which controlled the movement of the breaker points. Had to lap the flywheel onto the crankshaft with valve grinding compound. I also had a 79 model 100 horse and it was a good motor until I overheated it and scored the no. 1 cylinder. I thought enough of it to rebuild it and use another couple of years. I have a 120 Force now which is a 95 model. No problems so far but a stator and I bought it new. Would I rather have a Merc?? Yes.. Would I pay the difference right now?? No...

105hp Chryslers were the only model they rated for commercial use. I never worked on one but they looked very simple under the hood compared to OMC & Merc.

I've had my '74 75HP Chrysler for about 8 years now (2nd owner) and have had not one problem with it so far. (Knocking on wood) Just the usual regular maintenance each year.. plugs, lower unit oil, impeller etc.. and winterizing each season. I just make sure I use the correct amount of oil each time I fill the tanks and do regular yearly maintenance on it. Just like any engine requires. Chrysler engines werent the most popular engines in the boating industry, but with care they can be reliable.

I own 12 and pick up every Chrysler I can get my hands on . Mercury carries most if not all parts for them , Sierra carries a lot of parts for them also . They're easy to work on and have tons of torque . The only problems I really see is that when you get one , if it has'nt blown a head gasket , is to check the torque on the head bolts and check the water by-pass valve to make sure it's not stuck or clogged up . Chrysler became Force and the engines (inline) are basically the same and most of the parts will interchange .
