The the gelcoat has been busted on the lower rear section of the hull that sits underwater at rest. The area is about 2ft by 9 inchs high, with the peice I'm calling the gelcoat about a 1/16th inch thick. I tried to take a pic, file was too large. jpg

Thanks Bob

Hey Bob,

"Busted" means a lot of different things to a lot of different folks. Did you hit something? Is it a crack or a whole piece missing?
Depending on what photo sharing you are using they can be resized. Snoop around a bit and you'll find it.

Upload the pic to photobucket or a similar service - they have a resize option once you've done that, works nice for this board.

We need some pics to advice you on repairs :)

Here is a picture of the damaged hull, I have sanded on it some and removed some of the loose shell. I hope you can tell something from this pic, I get sick to my stomach everytime I look at the boat.

Thanks

can any body resize this for him?....td...les?

william.....when your in photo bucket.....copy the img tag, after its been resized to 640 x 480 somthing or other......

the pic is too small right now for good advise.......

however.....fear not.....its a glass boat and on a glass boat....everything can be fixed....nothing is impossible......invisible gellcoat repairs are done every day

...and for what it's worth, from the small pic it looks like cosmetic damage (a large area, but not more than cosmetic).

I expect you'll want to match the rest of the hull's shine, in which case you're probably looking to match the tint of the gelcoat closely, and probably patch the repair with gelcoat. Which can be done, although it's harder and more labor intensive than an epoxy patch and paint.

How important is it that this repair look "factory"?

What Eric said, epoxy and paint if you want.

Here are some better pics I think. Also I went to one of our paint supply stores and was looking at a short and long stranded waterproof fiber filler by Evercoat. Also one gentlemen said he had made this kind of repair, by using coth and tinting resin to get color. No, patch does not have to match perfect but I want it to be right and watertight! We love this boat.

P.S. Can you click on these pictures and open link to enlarge them?

That's a nasty gash, must be a good story behind it. It can be made seaworthy again easily, the cosmetics are a little tougher, so depending on how good you want it to look the difficulty varies. It will help if you can get to the inside of the damaged area to add glass there, but's it not a deal breaker, just better if you can.

yup.......as all above, grind out area...claen with acietone..add layers of glass...poly or epoxy....add fairing compound..(the stuff your looking at)...fair smooth and paint or have someone shoot it with gell.

the better you fair it....the smoother it will be.....any glass above the paint level will be seen ....so as you grind it....try to "dish" out the area....this will be a lot easyer if you can get a few layers of glass behind the area.....dont go thru the glass unless you can get behind it.
