I've got some loose, and some missing, hardware on my '69 fiberglass tri-hull. Loose screws won't tighten, they just keep turning. And, I'm not sure how missing hardware (snaps, top hinges, etc.) should attach at gunwale (screws, bolts or rivets?). Can't really get to anchor cleat screws from underneath bow. I can access beneath gunwale on sides, but it's full of foamed-in insulation. Any suggestions?

that's a tuff one..!!
for-the-most-part all it is is thin fiberglass.. thats it...

if your mountin' somethin' new... you can use those stainless toggle bolt white plastic holdy thingys.. u can get them at good marine centers... they do work...

Been there done that ;) . Hit walmart and get some of the marine epoxy comes in a stick form.

Cut off a small amount and knead it then roll it to fill the holes. You have 2 choices either set the screw in when its soft and be sure to get some in the threads or let it harden and re-drill a pilot hole then re-attach the screws.

I just re-did all the loose ones on my fiberglass and it worked great.

Also pick up a West System fiberglass repair booklet ($3.00) and it has more tips and advice on making mounting bolts/hardware secure.

Bob

Hey Bob_VT,
Tried the kneadable marine epoxy and, 40 snaps later, it worked great, just like you said. Thanks for the tip.

I agree with filling old holes with epoxy filler and redrilling. I try to use s/s bolts with nylon lock nuts and washers where I can instead of screws and I use plywood backing underneath for added strength on items like cleats. Also, a dab of 5400 caulk on the threads seals up the hole nicely once you tighten up the nut.

Fill the holes with marine-tex,(much better than epoxy)then redrill, tap etc. Whenever possible use a backing plate, if you can get to the underside of what you are mounting.
