Re: how to make friends on the lake.
I find it easy to strike up Dockside Chats. Some folks are jerks but others are quite pleasant. I don't judge from the outside appearance.
People want to talk about their boats. Making a comment about; "how nice" or "interesting", "I like that set up" gets them talking.
We have some boating freinds, because of this. We don't associate, other than on the Lake, but they are true freinds. We tend to join up, for a chat, whenever we are on the lake together. Family radio-code names and email addresses.
A few weeks ago, Mrs. Fleetwin and I were out just burning some fuel and enjoying the day when I noticed a young lady waving her arms. They were against the shore in a rental boat. We approached and they were so greatful. They said that they had been trying to attract someone for well over an hour. Their engine had died. They told me that some folks had approached, got within a few yards, but turned and went on. Stating, 'We don't have time for this".
So, the Admiral and I tossed them a line, tied them up, and towed them back to the Marina. About two miles.
They, and the marina/rental owner, were so greatful they offered to pay but I adamently refused.
I just said: "boating courtesy folks". "It should be expected."
In talking with the boat Captain (boat renter) she stated that this may have spoiled their feelings about boating. But, our kindness turned their feelings the other way.
If we don't respect each other, out there, someone will spoil it all for all.
