How much oil in 4.3l mercruiser?? please help

I have a 2005 vip vegas with mercruiser 4.3l. Motor serial # 0w017581. I am changing the engine oil. I drained old oil and have put 5 qts in and its still not showing up on dip stick. How many qts does it take?? please help as I've searched this forum for the last hour and cant find an answer. ( and yes I did put the drain plug back in lol) first time boat owner.

5 is more than enough to get a reading on the dip stick

Ayuh,.... I dump in 4 quarts, start it, run it a minute, shut it off, 'n top it off to the full mark, which is usually 'bout 4, 1/2 to 5 quarts,....

yea I don't understand. 5 qts and its not even touching the dip stick. I blew in dip stick hole and heard it bubbling, so it's not plugged there. the ONLY thing I can think of is would if the previous owner changed the dip stick with the wrong length dip stick.....can someone that has a 4.3 measure the length of their dip stick. i just bought boat a week ago. It looks like motor had about 7 qts that came out.

local dealer is saying part number for the dip stick 86194216....can someone tell me how long this dip stick is suppose to be

yes its level. I even tried jacking it up as high as I can with a floor jack and also bringing it all the way to the ground and still nothing.

see if manual 25 is correct for your application, can burn a copy

I thought adding too much oil was bad for an engine.

just joking about the extra oil. if too high the crank aerates it into foam and you lose oil pressure

Something in those dwgs don't make sense.
​There's a difference of ~11" between the 2 dipsticks from where the stick hits the top of the tube and the full mark.
Or am I missing something?

Ok, just got home and measured mine.
From where that yellow rubber seats on the tube to the very end is 20-1/8" .
My 4.3L is a 2003 model serial # OM643729.
Oh, mine is the one on the right in the picture from BT.
