How many poles

I have a 98 90hp, i cant find anything in my clymer on how poles the stator has, i need to buy a tach and i wanna make sure i get the right one.

You should have a 12 pole stator.

Good deal i should not have any problems getting a tach than, i really like the faria cheasapeke series gauges.

I was looking at my Stator yesterday. It has 8 obvious poles but part of the circle is solid for about 50? arc. Are there some poles hidden in this arc too?

Yes there are 4 additional poles (coils) in the covered portion of the stator.
