How many hours are to many on a salty outboard without a rebuild?

Re: How many hours to many on outboard?

My personal opinion is that is a bit of a loaded question. There are a lot of other factors that could really affect that number.........like if it was run with too little oil and how it was run. But thats JMHO, I am sure the guys here who work on these things for a living could give you a ballpark figure if you give some more info.

What kind of motor are we talking about? As you might expect, one person can buy a motor brand new, abuse it from the start and it might fail in just a few hours. On the other hand, another person can buy the same motor, use it and maintain it properly and it will run for 35 or more years without overhaul. At a rate of 100 hours per season/year that's 3500 hours. Therefore we can't give you a difinitive answer (at least I can't).

Meant to include that I have two 1940's Johnson 5 HP motors that are approaching 60 years old. Neither has had the power head disassembled. They are no longer used on a regular basis but they still run well.

I'd say that in salt water, time in the environment matters more than running hours. Working at the dealership in a salt water area, I saw lots of motors that didn't make it beyond 2 years. I'd be very cautious of that "salty" motor.

We gave a free checkup after 10 hours, which included head bolt retorquing and gear oil change etc. I sold a new motor to a commercial mullet fisherman and told him to bring it back after 10 hours. He said "see ya in the morning". It was ready for the bone pile after a year.

Six years old,and 1000 salt hours ?She won't look pretty.
My guess is one look at the corrosion and you won't want it.
