P.A.W. sells a 520 cubic inch kit for the 429/460. Get the early DOVE heads. they flow like Chevys. Finally, put it on the bottle.

Re: Hotroding the Ford 460

why so radical..... think you could start with some easy bolt ons.... intake such then progress from there if you want how much you looking for ought to be easy to get 400 hp + with out radical stuff the get up to 600 hp if you want to really boast it up...
how fast you want to go= how much money you want to spend

How fast are you now? I have a calculator that will show the speed gained per increased HP on your current set-up. I need your speed and your Horsepower.

Before you consider add-ons its best to find out just how much you will gain for say a 75 hp increase in power. For instance if you have 350 hp @ 65 mph, it will take 425 hp to push it to 70 mph. All boat set-ups are different so I would really need the specs from you. Its always best to make sure that you have the correct propeller/impeller to insure that your current horsepower is bieng put to good use.

Wide Open...
1st, IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUILD A HOT ROD..
Start with ta SOLID bottome end. Horspower is made in 2 ways, Displacement and fuel management. So Big Cubes and lots o fuel.
Or where any old wrench will tell yas, power is made in heads, i.e. combustion chamber. A set of heat ported and polished and put on a flow bench will give ya the most bang gor the buck! Bolting on a big carb without chaging cam and timg is jut like peeing in the wind. The move that fuel and bun it it must go through the head , get ignited andthen exausted.

Re: Hotroding the Ford 460

The bolt ons are anything from change intakes to one more suited to your purpose.top end power... I would guess that what you have now is a a balance between low end torque and top end horsepower... how much you willing to give up to get more top end....carbs will only help if you need the more cfm they deliver... heads are a sure way to make power but a big step and costly...camshaft change or maybe just a change of cam ceterline will make a remarkable improvement....I would fine tune what I had instead of throwing dollars at it to make more power.....attention to the fine details makes the most ponies for the buck...

Re: Hotroding the Ford 460

The biggest mistake made is installing a big carb on a high rise intake. Some high rise intake manifolds don't really flow well until 4000 rpm but stock 460 are about maxed out at 4500 rpm. You will loose at least 50 hp doing this.

Eldebrock sells a cam, carb and intake for the 460. It is a matched set. A good ignition will help.

I don't know if it is still true, but NASCAR had a 390 cfm maximum in their rules.

I raced amature on Chevys 350's. I would run them to 8000 rpm and ran 600 cfm carbs. I figure the engine speed I need, get the cam, then build the engine around it. 90% of the work was in the heads.

Re: Hotroding the Ford 460

an advanved timing chain set is a must in automotive 460's., chain, good exaust flow moderate cam upgrade and a good holley carb could add up to 120 hp

Re: Hotroding the Ford 460

Been there...done that ...got the tee shirt...and then switched to Chevrolet. The best way to get that boat to go faster would be to power it with a 454 Chevy! Lots more HiPo parts available and much cheaper.

But if you insist on running that 460 motor....

Fords biggest problem is they don't breathe. I would remove the heads and have them ported and polished or find somebody who has a set that are already done... sometimes that is cheaper (check with people at the local roundy-round track). Once the motor is able to get rid of the exhaust you can move on to a highrise intake manifold, cam shaft and larger carb. Generally buying a matched kit (intake, carb, cam & lifters) is the easiest way to go. But, making bolt on changes without doing the head work will result in minimal HP gains. Most bolt ons will result in low gains in HP but will change torque curves. Meaning it will either give you more topend or more power thru the midrange or more hole shot. Working the heads will give you the most bang for your buck!!

ford puts out a high preformance catalog you can get at any dealer parts desk.it has every thing from raw blocks and cams to gasgets . some awsome alum heads for 460 block in there(429)make no mistake these engines can make serious power.

Re: Hotroding the Ford 460

Most boat builders that used the 460 did not do any real internal modifications. The cam is retarded at the chain and pin. You can use an early timing chain set or go to an offset cam pin. Ford did this in order to pass emissions. In either case, you can expect about a 60Hp increase if this mod has not already been done.
