hi,

i have been battling a problem with my honda
7.5 outboard.

after running at idle for a few minutes
it dies out. i can smell a lot of gas.

gas sometimes comes out the top of the carb.

i've cleaned the carb, etc to no avail.

took it to a shop and they re-cleaned it.
ran for them.

dumped my gas, figuring it was the problem.
new gas, and it still does the same...

then i figured the pump was not regulating pressure (there is no return line fot the gas).

i dismantled the pump. cleaned it, and that seemed to cure the problem.

but after only one outing, the outboard is acting up again.

mildly, at first.
seemed to flood out soon after starting,
but got it re-fired, and took off soon thereafter.

once at slow speed to raise sail, it died
again - flooded out.

managed to motor home, but it died
-this time while running at speed.

i am tempted to try to find a rebuild kit for both the carb and pump.

am i headed in the right direction?

and where to get the parts?

tia

bob.d.

Re: honda 7.5 flooding

Bob

Does this motor have a Mikuni carb. If it does than your low speed jet is pluged. the problem of the gas coming out of the carb is a sign. If the low speed jet is pluged the gas will come out of the top side of the carb through a little hole. If that is not the case, than your neddle and seat might have a little dirt under it not shuting the gas off when the float is up. Maybe another thing, is make sure one of your floats does not have a hole in it. If you have to clean the low speed jet, than remove the bowl of the carb. You will see a extension tube facing you. Look in there with a flash light and you will see that you can remove the jet with a small screw driver. Remove it and clean all the holes.
Let me know how you make out

markcv

thanks,

don't recall the carb type.
i think it was labeled as honda ?!?

i had it all apart once before and cleaned it well. don't recall if it had removeable jets.
if it did i probably took them out
(i've rebuilt enough weber carbs on my cars).

but there always a chance that it is newly plugged up, or i missed something...

i'll keep you posted

O.K. buddie. It,s a pretty sure bet that your needle and seat is not needle and seating.Go to your dealer and get a new needle. The seat on these carbs are not replaceable but comlete new carbs are surpisingly cheap in comparison to other com******.

I can't tell by your post where you're from, but if you use it in cold water you need to install a different thermostat to allow the engine to run warmer. Hondas are notorious for this and mine had the same symptoms yours does. Replaced the thermostat and everything is peachy.. Joe

Re: honda 7.5 flooding

thanks for the replies, guys.

here's an update:

first of all, i'm in new jersey.
i sail the barnegat bay.
the water is close to 70F this past weekend
wink.gif

the needle was replaced, already.

after cleaning out the fuel pump, two weekends ago, it seemed to run like a champ.
but last tuesday it bogged out again.

so this weekend i tore down the carb and
fuel pump, thoroughly cleaned them
(including the jet assembly in the carb).

this time i added some fuel freshener
to the tank overnight.

next day, i had it running for about two hours (including at least an hour at idle
at the dock) without incident.

this was without the cover on, though.

when i put the cover on the engine, the idle
dropped significantly.

i was able to adjust the speed/mixture
so it would stay running, but now i'm
confused...

where the heck does the air come in, anyway?

Re: honda 7.5 flooding

Just read a reply w/ mention of "new honda carbuerators" I am looking for one for a Honda BF8A. My idle jet is hopelessly shot I think. The motor floods the lower cyl frequently. Part of the problem was the orig metal tank which built condensation and left water in sys. Have made the change but I think that it is too late. I am looking for a reliable source for new parts. Great motor!. 12yrs old. Any suggestions.
