Went out last night to do a bit of night fishing. I don't normally go out on weekends or when its close to a holiday, but it was just after a big storm and I have found the fishing is often better. While sitting at my first spot I notice several boats with bad lighting, some burnt out lights and so on but hey one or two out of three ain't bad right. On the way switching spots as I round a turn I see a light come on and the beam gets flashed back and forth across my boat, thinking some one is in distress I cruse on over to find 2 people with their boat on the bank and I ask if they need some help, to be told no we are OK just playing with the flash light, So I give them a bit of a talk about a false distress signal. Gezzzzz, so I pull out and keep going. A few hours later after deciding to head in I run across 2 boat loads just sitting in the middle of the lake no lights on. I remember why I don't fish on weekends or on holidays. However the fishing was great caught 16 nice cats with a total weight of 38 pounds.

Been there, done that, James. Missed a head-on at 30 knots by less than a foot on Minnetonka one midnight in 1981. Other boat had no running lights and was running at least as fast as I was.

Really counted my blessings that night.

Last 4th, as all the boats were clearing out from the fireworks heading in a westerly direction, one fool in a 30ish footer is trying to cross the traffic at a right angle in a necked down (busy) stretch between the inner and outer bay.

Lights?

Had glowsticks hanging every 6 ft down both sides of the boat. Once he came into my view, we were close. For his sake, its a good thing my boat cruises at 6 knots, because I would have punched a hole in his boat, and probably scratched the paint on mine.

Thought for a second I was about to be abducted by a UFO..

Re: holiday boaters

we have fireworks at about 6 different locations around the harbor this year. So when they are over, you have boats going every direction, not just one main stream of traffic. Some narrow stretches and lots of open water.

If I were to come home from the display I'm thinking about, on the proper (starboard) side of the river, I would have to cross a mile wide stretch twice to get on the correct side and then back to get to my river's entrance. In the daytime, or low traffic at night, I hug the port side and avoid the ship traffic. I think Wednesday night it will be too much playing chicken.
