I do quite a lot of high speed trolling offshore of the treasure coast of florida and have had mixed success.I have landed wahoo as big as 62 lbs. and dolphin to 51 lbs and numerous large kingfish,etc.etc.Just was curious if there is any other people in the vicinity who troll this area with some stories they would like to share about any kind of fishing in this area.

Re: high speed trolling

treasure coast is where a lot of spanish gallions were lost in storms around here and they still do occasionally find some of the gold and silver around the shallow offshore reefs and beaches.

No treasures around here, but we do some high
speed trolling for Rainbows. I use planer boards
to get my large polarbear flies away to the side
of the boat and troll at 6 to 10 knots when
trolling for Gerard rainbows on Kootenay Lake in
B.C. These big trout reach 30lbs.

Re: high speed trolling

that sounds like a heck of a fight.i was in british columbia last summer on my way to ak.you live in some of the most beautiful country i have ever seen in my life.did not get to fish b.c. but sure would like to some day.i did get to fish off of the san juan islands though and caught lots of silvers and a 26 lb king salmon.we were catching one silver after another trolling the herring with the big silver flashers.was new to me but it worked well thats for sure.what are polar bear flies and where is kootenay lake.have you heard about a new fishery of of queen charlotte islands?

Re: high speed trolling

Polarbear flies are large flies with two single
hooks. depending on who is tying they can range
from 6"to 13" or longer The main body is tyed
with polar bear hair. They resemble Dolly varden,
kookanee salmon or white fish and can be tied in a
variety of colors.
Kootenay lake lies between the Selkirk mountains
and the Purcell mountains just north of the
Idaho boarder. We fish out of Kaslo near the
north end of the lake in southern B.C.
The Queen Charlotte Islands have some of the best
salmon and halibut fishing in the world ,but I am
not aware of any new fishery?
A 26 lb chinook is a very nice fish. Hope he gave
you a good fight.

Re: high speed trolling

I don't do any high speed trolling right now (very small boat), but that seems to be the E-ticket for anyone looking to pick up a Wahoo or two.. I'll probably give it a try eventually when the big boat's ready.. It's gotta be a blast to have a monster wahoo(the fastest swimming fish in the ocean) nail a bait at that speed and then have the fish turn and head in the other direction...

I mostly bottom fish inshore and near shore around Jupiter on the 65 foot reef east/northeast of the inlet and around Peanut Island and Palm Beach... I'm one of the few crazy fools who'll head out Jupiter inlet in a 15' flats boat...

I have done some slow bait dragging with some frends for dolphin and such with fair results using ballyhoo(skirted and not) and big mullet..

Re: high speed trolling

snapperbait, the 15 foot boat thing certainly sounds like a adventure unless its one of the summer days thats nice and flat but we both know that the storms show up in a hurry.I dont have a large boat either,21 ft. but I am fortunate to have a friend who works for a tackle company and he hooks me up with a lot of samples to try out.I have been getting a lot of high speed trolling lures lately thus the new found interest in high speed trolling.the lures themselves are very expensive i.e. 15 to upwards of $75.if it were not for the freebies i probably would not have such a interest, but may as well drag something on the way to where your going fishing if it does not slow you down to much.i do quite a bit of gray snapper fishing ,i especially like it at night with the chum bags out and a couple of cold beers and dodging the heat of the day in summer.i head towards jupiter to do this, have a couple of honey holes down that way.anyways, nice to know there a neighbor that uses this web site.tight lines there buddy.

Re: high speed trolling

Aquaholic.. I have braved some 3 to 5 foot seas in that little boat... Sometimes it does'nt look all that bad till you actually get out in it... I'll stay out in 2 to 3 foot seas but it's really hard to fish in that cause you get to bobbing around too much... Got a 21' openfisherman project going on right now and it's just about ready to float, so I'll be outside more often this summer...

I do quite a bit of snapper (mangrove and mutton) fishing at night especially in the summer but only inshore around the inlets at night..

Ahhh, night time... Cool, quiet, little boat traffic, live bait's easy to get, and you can get a parking spot at the boat ramps...

I have a few spots near Peanut island where the channel drops off straight down from 12 feet right down to 30-35 feet.. Picked up some nice one's up to 4-5 lbs. with the occasional snook and who know what else...

See ya out there...

Re: high speed trolling

You should be able to get polar bear hair from
mostly any reputable fly fishing store or Hackle
shop.It can be very pricey. I get mine from a
Friend who owns a taxidermist shop.He gets polar
bears capes in from time to time for mounting or
tanning.polar bear hair is hollow and makes for
excellent tying and has great buoyancy.
