High idle only

Hello,

I'm new to boats and engines and this forum, and I've quickly exhausted my limited repair ability. Here's what's going on.

The last several times I ran my 88? 35horse merc the idle speed (out of gear) kept getting higher. Now when I start it, it goes almost full throttle. I took a look at the throttle linkage (tiller handle) and it looks like it is working right.

There is a screw on the opposite side of the carb from the starter that a friend told me to screw all the way in and then back out 1 and half turns. Had no effect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got the carb off, hope I can get it back on. I uncscrewed a couple of the brass plugs at the bottom and there is a bit of sludge stuff in there.

I guess I'm gonna get some carb cleaner and spray out everything good.

Anything else I should do while it's off?

After reading other posts it looks like the best advice is to get a manual.

Anybody used the online Seloc manual?
