I am getting a small bass boat and want to go out as soon as i can (the water will be cold). The lakes that i go to dont have a topo map, so i dont know the depths i am fishing. Does any one know where i could start to locate fish? Its not a big lake at all. It has a small dam at one end, and the other end forms into a small stream that runs into other lakes. Ther are a lot off fallen down trees. PLease give me some pointers thanks

Re: help with winter fishing

Being cold blooded, fish will head to the warm areas. On warm days start at the shallow end and look for off color water as it will heat up first , working your way out to the deeper areas. Rocks in the sun will transmit heat into the area so check the out also. Slow rolled or bounced spinner baits work well as to crank baits in a crawfish pattern. If you can score a depth finder with temp. gauge that would help tremedously. Will show surface temp. and bottom structure. Have fun, lots of info. out there on this subject , all you gotta do is adapt it to your situation.

If you can't afford a fish finder with temp gauge, a separate one can be purchased for $5 or $6. They do come in handy.

Both places you mentioned bear looking at. The dam is most likely the deepest place on the lake and you should find fish there or near it year round. Another good spot is where any feeder creek comes into the lake once agian year round. Don't overlook any warmer water like was mentioned but even without any kind of extra equipment you should be able to start fishing in the two places mentioned and catch fish.
