I have been handed down a boat and trailer. The motor is a Kiekhaefer Mercury Mark 30E (which actually seems to be in pretty good shape for its age) and all I know of the boat is what I was told. It is a Starcraft 15'. All of the markings are gone but the aluminum haul is in great shape and the parts seem to all be attatched. I would like to restore it with my son. Can anyone help with catalogs or help me to identify what model the bnoat is? Any links or info would be great. Thanks

Post some pictures and someone here is likely able to help you identify it. Also, hull id and serial numbers help.

Re: Help with boat restoration

Sorry about not adding the pics last time. I had a little trouble resizing them so I hope they turn out. Any help with identification of the boat and where I can order or get replacement parts would be great. Thanks

Re: Help with boat restoration

Check for the mfg ID plate, possibly on the starboard side of the transom. The last digits will give you the year of mfg.

I have "restored" an 18' SuperSport bowrider recently, and did not find a OEM source for parts or even after market stuff. Ebay, boat graveyards, and your own fabrications are the best bets.

These boats are fairly simple and the fitments in those days were very basic. Usually, existing materials were adapted by the boat builders - remember the old RV's.:D

To do list:
Strip hull of all things attached
Remove floor
Replace transom-Clad motor well side of transom(notorious for rot) with aluminum coil stock
Prep hull for paint/Paint
Replace floor
Re-attach all fitments
Wire the boat - I have a wiring diagram that will layout everything you. PM when you get there, I'll e-mail it to you.

Take photos of everything you do, it will improve your memory and be the foundation for a brag thread:D after you are done.

Do a search on the tasks listed above. There is a wealth of info concerning each. You can choose what fits your plan and your mechanical skills. It will range from redneck engineering to the elites of nothing but the best and most expensive.:D

Good luck, it will be a rewarding journey. My pay off, after working with my son for a year and a half, one of the grandsons asked quite sincerely, "Papa, does this boat really go in the water?" It was so close to being finished, I could say yes with a fair degree of honesty.

Re: Help with boat restoration

Thanks so much BURROAK. Your input helps me get an idea of where to start. I am definately a novice boat owner but my son , who is 12, is so enthusiastic about this thing. It's definately a great project for us and an oportunity to show him how to take something old and make it new again with patience and hard work. I'll start looking threads up and if you could send me some diagrams that would be great. I've searched the boat and there are no markings what so ever. There is a visable tag on the original trailer but it is wasted and can't be read. I guess I just have to go with what I was told, that it is a 1964 starcraft. I noticed there where different names for some models but I guess hardware is hardware when it comes to boats. I do not have the intention of making it absolutely original. But I do want to respect the era and good old craftsmanship. Thanks again!

She dates to about 1962. What color are the rubrails? The boats then came with only one color option per model. If she were 16', she'd be a Starcraft Jupiter. The color of the rub rails down the side should end the mystery. Check for a hull data plate inside the transom.

I've got the same (I think) boat, which I'm pretty sure is a 1963 15' Jet Star. Mine has red rub rails.
