Hey,
I just found an old Elgin hidden away :) that must have belonged to my late uncle.
Model 571.58301 - one cylinder.

Any idea of the date and horsepower (ponypower maybe more like it)? Where would I get a basic manual for it?

I am sure this hasn't been on the water for twenty years plus. Any tip on what should be done before I farkle with it and try to get it started.

Thanks

Re: Help with an ELGIN

You have a 46 1 1/4 hp.
It uses 3/4 pt to a gallon mix.
It was built by West Bend for Sears.
Youl need to go through the fuel system from tank to carb with special attention to cleaning.
Especially the jets and passages of the carb.
I believe the lower unit uses grease.I think I have heard it referred to as non channeling grease.
You should at least check the impeller.
A manual of any kind will be hard to come by. A
West Bend or Elgin manual will work.
You might try ebay, manuals appear both original and on CD.Chrysler and Force motors are decendents
of West Bend.
The Antique Outboard Club may be some help as
long as you dont ask what it is worth.
www.aomci.org
