The prop shaft roller/needle bearings fell out during a re-installation, after replacing the prop shaft seals. I was able to locate all but 1... So now I will have to replace the prop shaft bearing. I will have to pull the newly installed seals to get to the bearing housing. My question is does anybody have any advice on how to remove the old bearing housing that is pressed into the carriage? I went through hell just getting the seals out the first time. I am working on a old 1973 Mercury 500 50hp.

Clamp the bearing carrier in a vice and with a long brass rod, drive the bearing housing out from the seal end. If you're careful the seal may not be damaged.

Pad the vice jaws so the carrier isn't marred or scratched.

A bit of heat on the housing in the area of the bearing will help, too. I use a small propane torch. I also use old, cheapie sockets of the same diameter of the bearing to use as a drift. Prevents damaging the housing.
