Got my 85 johnson out today, filled with new gas, new battery, beld the fuel lines. turned the key, click, click, click. Hunted it down it was either in the relay that splits the power cable or in the starter itself. Turned the starter fine, not stuck. Tested the relay post going to the starter and it was dead with the key on, is the relay bad or the starter stuck inside?
Any help greatly appreciated

Re: Help outboard gurus

The relay post of the strater solenoid will be dead with just the key on and not turned to start.Try jumping from the hot side cable of the solenoid to the ignition terminal of the solenoid and see if starter cranks.

Hi buzzking.
If you are referring to the starter solenoid, there will be no voltage on the post going to the starter until you turn the key to start. If all you hear is a "click, click" from the solenoid, replace it. The main pick up bar in the solenoid is probably burnt to the point it will not pass sufficent current to turn the starter. :p

Re: Help outboard gurus

Check battery voltage at rest and when key in start position.

Have someone turn the key to start while you check for voltage at the big terminal on the starter itself. If full voltage there, it's the starter itself.

If no voltage there, check the battery side of the solenoid. Got power there, then check for voltage to the little wire(s) on the solenoid. One of them if so equiped with more than one, should energise when the key goes to start. When energised the solenoid should make a complete circuit from one side big wire to the other side big wire. You could try jumping across the two big wires momentarily but be very carefull as the motor will spin and sparks fly. But if the little wire had juice when switch to start, and it turns the motor when the terminals are "jumped" it's the solenoid relay.

buzz,

Those crossflow V-4's are notorious for corrosion on the ground cable where it attaches to the engine block.

Take it completely off and clean up the entire area.

Re: Help outboard gurus

Don't forget to clean both terminals and connections. A bad ground will porduce the same effects as a bad power in wire.... :) ;)
